One of Alabama’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, Highland Park, is also one of its prettiest. Highland Park features hilly, wooded streets lined with a diverse collection of architecture that includes historic mansions, office towers, and apartment buildings. Other important landmarks include the Highland Park Golf Course, Virginia Samford Theatre, and the Donnelly House.
Highland Park sits along the east side of Five Points South and Southtown and is within a few blocks of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. St. Vincent Hospital and the Southview Medical Group are also located in the neighborhood. Residents enjoy local hotspots like O’Henry’s Coffee and Tea and Rojo, along with several parks, including Rufus Rhodes Park, William J. Rushton Sr. Park, and Caldwell Park. Highland Park Golf Course, the oldest golf course in Alabama, is located on the east side of the neighborhood.

Property Ratings at Hillside Manor
We stayed in unit 5 for the past year and loved the dark floors, arch into the kitchen, and space. We used over-the-door storage for the laundry closet and converted the water heater area into a pantry. Hosting guests was easy with ample space. Footsteps and occasional loud neighbors were minor issues. Here are some observations: - July 2023: AC quit working; emergency maintenance fixed it by the next morning. - A week before our lease ended, the AC stopped again but was promptly fixed. - Mold was present on the downstairs bathroom ceiling upon move-in. Maintenance bleached it, and we used a dehumidifier and air purifiers 24/7 to prevent further mold. - Frequent plumbing issues led to water line work and a high water/sewer bill, which was credited after notifying management. - Water was often turned off for maintenance during the day, which was inconvenient for our schedule. - Some tenants don't clean up after their dogs, despite management's reminders. - Drafty doors and windows required adding weather strips. - The upstairs gets very warm in the summer. - Kitchen sink pipes often come apart, causing cabinet flooding. - The dishwasher is loud, requires the light switch to operate but works well. - Power flickers occasionally, likely due to the building's age. - Frequent internet outages with Spectrum; T-Mobile service was good. - The storm door's windows are hard to raise but provide good airflow. - Ample parking is available. - We felt safe despite reports of car break-ins; we never experienced any issues. - Occasional sewage smells outside the unit. - Some tenants argue loudly, leading to police visits, and litter in the parking lot. The property manager, Danielle, is easy to communicate with, and maintenance, especially Jeremy, responded promptly and genuinely tried to fix issues. Overall, despite some quirks, we cherished our time in unit 5 and felt it was worth it for its size and quality.
