River is a suburb in South Newport News that stretches along the James River. This quaint community travels along Warwick Boulevard, connecting the neighborhood south into Downtown Newport News and north towards Christopher Newport University. There’s also an Amtrak station available to commuters that sits on the north end of town near Huntington Park, a sprawling green space that offers a beautiful beach, a large playground overlooking the river, athletic fields, and more. Nearby is the James River Fishing Pier and Crab Shack on the James, a casual spot with fresh seafood, burgers, and cocktails. There are a few other businesses in town, but the remainder of River is residential. Although homes in the area don’t overlook the river, residents enjoy stately homes on tree-lined streets with paved sidewalks at an affordable rate.

Property Ratings at Huntington on the James
I lived here last June & these apartments are NOT where you want to be. Walking into my apartment the halls and stairway’s reeked of weed everyday I entered and exited my place. I called to complain about potential people dealing drugs there & nothing was ever done. There’s cops that sit out by the apartments 24/7 & the homeless population is infested in that area you’ll see at least 10-15 homeless near the apartments. Personally I can’t say one nice thing about this place even the week I moved I was not allowed to take a tour until the day I signed my lease definitely underprepared & totally unprofessional.
The ladies in the office are so helpful and sweet. If you work at the shipyard it's so close by. I can't recommend Huntington on the James enough.
This is my first apartment and the area is quiet, plus the river view is beautiful. The ladys in the office are so helpful and they care about the apartments.
Property Manager at Huntington on the James, Responded To This Review
Thank you for the five-star review! We appreciate the feedback.
The apartments are in a good area. Close to shopping, shipyard, bases and interstate. The water view apartments are very nice. The grounds are well kept. Pet friendly and I have a large dog. Overall pretty good place to live.
I moved in on June 15th 2015, since I have been here I have not had any disturbances at all. The apartment is a good size 2 bedroom 1 bath. Is has a wonderful view of the James river as well. Although it is located directly next to the ship yard I have not been affected by shipyard traffic in the evenings. It is very accessible from different directions and it is very close to the beach, interstate, bridges and tunnels, and also Peninsula Town Center Mall. The neighbors are wonderful and it is quiet. The apartment comes with a stacked washer and dryer, which is very convenient, white appliances including range, microwave, and refrigerator. It has a breakfast bar and a pantry with shelves for storage. Their are lots of windows and sunlight. Closets are spacious and I really enjoy the hardwood floors. It's a wonderful place to live. The rent is also in a good range and they offer discounts to shipyard employees which really helps. Very content with these apartments!
The office staff is very courteous and willing to work with tenants. I have only been living here since April, but this was my first apartment by myself, and the process was effortless. Marilyn was very helpful through the entire process; even to this day, and although I have forgotten the property manager's name, she is a very nice, helpful woman as well.
