West Bde Maka Ska, once known as West Calhoun, is one of Minneapolis’ best neighborhoods. The neighborhood voted to change the name from West Calhoun to West Maka Ska in 2020. Between its natural beauty, family-friendly atmosphere, great schools, and excellent location, it’s not hard to see why so many renters are attracted to West Bde Maka Ska. The community is nestled along the western shore of Bde Maka Ska, the largest lake in Minneapolis. Anchored by Minikahda Club, a lush private golf course, West Maka Ska is south of Cedar Lake and Lake of the Isles and north of Lake Harriet. With easy access to four lakes and waterfront green space, West Maka Ska residents have plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Go swimming at Thomas Beach, take a stroll along the Grand Rounds trail, or see a concert at the Lake Harriet Bandshell Park. Along with natural beauty, West Maka Ska has restaurants, grocers, and stores in the neighborhood.

Property Ratings at Lakewood Isles
Lakewood Isles/Calhoun West is an amazing management company. I lived here initially in a garden level 1 bedroom from 2016-2018 at lakewood. I moved out because my boyfriend and I split up and i couldnt afford the rent so i moved to a 1 bedroom in uptown. (which ended up being an awful idea, the apartment constantly flooded, car windows got smashed out and 4-6 apartment showings a day and was basically told to kick rocks when i asked them to only show it during the week. i actually was reliniqushed from the lease early due to the flooding issue .) That being said i called lakewood and told them what happened. Unfortunately these apartments go quick! it is the best value around. I was able to get into a 2 bedroom with days notice in the calhoun west building. As others have said at lakewood the walls are paper thin which cant be helped by management, the garden level apartments are damp and prone to bugs here and there. The parking lot does fill up by 8pm in the winter months. they are fantastic about plowing and the building itself is otherwise kept clean. you can generally see a maintance guy around the building working on something - whom are also very friendly. at both buildings you dont need to worry about packages being stolen since they are sent directly to the main office. I'm disappointed to see anything less than 5 stars since renting from this company has been nothing but fantastic. I've had some -pretty awful landlords in the past, they are out there! The only complaint i would have is that calhoun west out of the 3 buildings only one of them has an underground garage so for me i would have to park in the garage and walk across the lot in snow to get to my apartment. However i havent had an issue finding a parking space any hour of the day in the lot. And they DO enforce the towing if you dont have a sticker.l didnt believe it until a friend got towed. the apartments are spacious and clean and some have a few updates. the smoke free community is a plus as well. a huge thanks to katie and jessica ( also the gentleman whose helped me carry large packages out to my car on several occasions.) You've all provided an amazing experience.
I lived in the Calhoun West Apartments with my spouse and 2 children for a year and a half. I was really impressed with how great the staff was from the day we moved in to the day we moved out. The staff are all really friendly. Before we moved in, they painted all the walls and had new carpet put in. We had a few times we needed to call maintenance and they were always super quick about fixing things. I've had unreliable landlords in the past. So, it was a relief to realize they would actually take care of things when problems arose. A couple weeks after moving out, we got a check for our full deposit (plus interest earned)! We only moved out because we purchased a house. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for an apartment.
I hated living here. Terrible location. If you want to get anywhere you'll have at least a 15 minute drive to the freeway. On top of that there were some major issues my roommate and I had with this place. This is one of the worst apartment complexes I have ever lived in. Buildings are extremely outdated and run down, thin walls, and poorly designed. We had to call maintenance multiple times for things that should have been taken care of before move in. Within the first couple weeks, our tub facet started leaking and progressively got worse. Once we even had to call 24 hour emergency maintenance for our bath facet leaking (we measured it in a tuperware it was pouring out at over 3L/minute) and they never showed up. The next day we had to call regular maintenance just to get it fixed. We were also promised new appliances that never showed up. Management is awful they do little to nothing about the problems we had. For example, I had someone parking in my parking spot that I pay extra for multiple times, nothing was ever done and we had to fight to get money for the times I couldn't park there. Absolutely ridiculous. They don't give you 24 hours notice for entering the apartments. I would rather move back in with my mother than live here again.

I have lived at Lakewood Isles for over 2 years now, and I cannot say enough good things. The updates done to the fitness center, sauna, public bathrooms, and party room are awesome! I also love that the staff signs off on packages for me and keeps them locked up in the leasing office, so I can just grab them when I get home. The staff is always really friendly, and the maintenance guys are super mindful about getting to my work orders right away (usually that day or the next). For being so close to the lakes and Uptown environment this place is the best. I couldn't imagine paying double the rent (or more!) for anything else when I can get everything I need and want for a better price at Lakewood Isles.
I lived in my 1 bed/1 bath at Lakewood Isles for 4 years and only moving to be closer to work for health reasons. Staff is amazing there. Everyone is incredibly friendly and extremely helpful! Maintenance guys are really friendly and always complete repairs within a day or two. Great amenities and you really can't beat the location. The Greenway is in the back of the building with easy access for residents and free off street parking is a major plus in Uptown. I have lived in apartments for over a decade and this place has been my favorite. I love the community activities they plan the general culture of the residence is really welcoming. They have a nice party room to use and the rooftop deck is a hidden gem that most residents seem to forget about! The updated gym is pretty nice too!
Lakewood Isles is located in Uptown Minneapolis. This is a great location, close to bars, shops, restaurants, and a trendy culture. In apartment also offers an indoor pool, along with a sauna. I live with two of my best friends from college (we just graduated in May from Hamline University). Overall- great place and awesome staff!
I love my apartment and I have been here for over two years. The sunken living room helps create a feeling of space and the walk-in closet and screened-in deck are amazing. The pool and fitness rooms are nice, and the staff is very friendly. Maintenance issues have always been addressed quickly. The location is great for Uptown, the lakes, and anything off highway 100 or 394. Having said that, the walls are extremely thin and you can hear conversations in the apartments on either side. People smoke and burn incense so the hallways always smell bad and it makes it hard to leave your windows open in the summer. The only windows in the apartment are the sliding glass door from the living room to the screened-in deck and a window from the bedroom onto the screened-in deck so there is not a lot of light or air circulation. There are two laundry rooms with 6 washers each, but usually only half work at time so it can be very difficult to find open washers. Garage parking is an extra $75 per month and cannot be dropped once started. The dumpsters are kept in the garage, so in the summer the garage smells like trash and can make the interior of your car smell like trash. The smoke alarms are extremely sensitive and the fire alarms go off several times a year. There are a lot of plumbing issues that cause the water to be shut off about once per month, then your water is orange for a while. I love the layout but it's a lot of money for everything you have to put up with.
I rarely take time to write reviews for things, but I love it here enough it's worth sharing... The leasing staff is really great, friendly, and so helpful. Mirroring that, the maintenance crew is stellar and are equally as friendly! Both combined are my favorite part of living in this community. Buildings and amenities are well kept and clean, area is very safe day/night, and I've never had any issues with other residents in the 2 years I've been here. Having lived in quite a few apartments over the past 6 years in multiple states, Lakewood Isles is hands-down my favorite place I've called home thus far. Don't plan on moving any time soon...and in fact have already wrangled a few more friends to join the community too! :)
I've lived at Lakewood Isles for about 2 years and have had great experience with the location. Right behind the apartment building is The Greenway which is great for walking, running, or biking. It is a 2 minute drive to Lake Calhoun which is great when the weather is nice. The office staff has been great every time I've met with them. In my building the water pressure is a bit low so I would check that out in your apartment walkthrough. Other than that, the maintenance staff is very prompt and has fixed all of our issues within 24 hours.
