Property Ratings at Laurel Commons
I've lived here for 9 years and I love it. The apartments are spacious, clean and well set up. They are pet friendly, have washer and dryer hookups, come with a fridge and stove, and have nice yards. Located right in the middle of town, so if you're not able to drive or don't have a car... everything is easy to get to. The school system is great! My children are special needs and once we moved down here they did a 180 on how well they were doing in school. The staff are super kind and helpful. They will do everything they can to help you out. Definitely has been a great place to raise my family.
I recently had the unfortunate experience of renting a property that left me utterly dissatisfied and frustrated. From the moment I stepped into the unit, it was clear that the property management had little regard for the well-being and comfort of their tenants. Firstly, the cleanliness of the property was appalling. The floors were sticky, and it looked like the place hadn't been properly cleaned in ages. The bathroom was a breeding ground for BLACK MOLD , and I felt like I needed to wear hazmat gear just to step inside. It's evident that hygiene and maintenance are not a priority for the Management. The appliances in the kitchen were outdated and barely functional. The refrigerator made strange noises throughout the night, and I had to resort to eating out most of the time because I didn't trust the condition of the stove. Cooking became a hazardous endeavor in this poorly maintained property. The windows in 95 percent of the units do not open which is also a safety hazard. Your monthly utility bills will run you around the same amount as the rent or more and the insulation is non existent. Noise became a constant issue as well. The walls were paper-thin, and I could hear every footstep, conversation, and even the snoring and farting of my neighbors. It was impossible to get a decent night's sleep, and the lack of insulation turned the unit into an echo chamber of misery. The people they rent to are drug addicts and the ambulance was here on the property daily due to people overdosing on METH. People would complain that their children were finding needles outside all the time and weird men and women walking around all hours of the night looking to score their next fix. To make matters worse, the management if thats what you want to call them was unresponsive and indifferent to my concerns. Requests for repairs and improvements were met with empty promises and a complete lack of follow-through. The fake MAINTANENCE crew are a laughable joke. They do the bare minimum to keep their free room and board. They do patch work that barely fixed the issue for a few weeks until they are called out again to fix the issue they fixed weeks before AGAIN. The outside of the property looks ran down and falling apart im surprised that HUD is allowing this property to participate as they have strict guidelines for the program. It's clear that they are more interested in collecting rent than ensuring the well-being SAFETY and satisfaction of their tenants. .
I moved from out of state to this community. The staff was excellent and caring (very professional). I love my place and it is close to anything I want to go too. This was a good choice.
My husband and I moved here a couple months ago from Colorado, so obviously we didn't get to see the apartment before hand, but from the pictures it seemed like a nice place and the people we talked to on the phone were professional enough, so we weren't worried. We got here, and the apartment wasn't ready for us to move into, after we told them what day we would be arriving. The front and back doors have huge dents in them, when we arrived there were cigarettes all over the side walk, and I would say my biggest issue with this place is the cigarette smoke. We had never run into a place that allowed it's tenants to smoke indoors, so we didn't even think to ask about that. The neighbors smoke inside and whenever they light up we can smell it very strongly in our house. The main office and mail room also reek of cigarette smoke. I'm an asthmatic and I have a one year old daughter who I don't want being exposed to the smoke. We also found out the previous tenants did hard drugs, and they found needles while cleaning out the apartment, which is supposed to be disclosed to any prospective tenants beforehand. We are looking to move out as soon as possible and will be contacting a lawyer to see what options we have. Do NOT rent from these people unless you like inhaling a pack of cancer sticks a day.
The apartments are roughly 45 minutes from Charleston and 30 minutes from Parkersburg in the small community of Ravenswood. This is both a plus and a minus in my opinion and it is an easy commute to either. The 45 minutes from Charleston is still quite a haul though. The apartments and townhouses are very reasonably priced. In fact I couldn't get a one bedroom apartment in Cross Lanes for less than I currently pay for a 3 bedroom townhouse. The units are a bit older and do not have central air however they do allow pets which was a huge plus. Most apartments will only allow one or two animals so finding a location that would allow my four was like finding a needle in a haystack. My unit had been recently renovated and has hardwood flooring in most of it but there may be some with just carpet. Overall for the price and location I feel that these units are hard to beat.
