The name State College represents the city quite well. This suburb is home to the main campus of Penn State University, a prestigious university with a park-like atmosphere and historic architecture like Old Main, an expansive landmark campus administrative building dating back to 1930. State College is the ideal city for students, faculty, and staff of the university, as well as professionals and families. This suburb is home to an array of kid-friendly parks like Holmes-Foster Park, Orchard Park, and the Arboretum at Penn State. State College features abundant restaurants and bars off of East College Avenue in Downtown State College. Apartments, houses, condos, and townhomes range from affordable to upscale.

Property Ratings at Lion's Gate Apartments
Highly incompetent and rude staff. Often made errors in account keeping. I ended up paying more than what was required on a couple of occasions, only to be reimbursed the amount upon me bring to their attention that their records were wrong. Don't know how some reviewers found the staff to be polite and helpful.
Water comes out of the tap white, hot water just doesn't work parts of the day, management forces multiple showings a month, AC unit does not cool the back bedrooms. Everyone just excuses issues as being old housing. Would not recommend staying here for any amount of time.
Overpriced, old housing. Can find much nicer apartments that are $200 cheaper in downtown state college. Apartments are extremely noisy as well, can hear neighbors through the wall even at a conversational volume. Laundry facilities are overpriced, dryers typically need to be run 2 times to dry clothes so just one complete load ends up costing $7.
This is a great place to get away from the craziness of Downtown State College. Rather quiet to study peacefully but ever once and awhile you will be treated to the sounds of the local high school marching band, they're pretty good. There is ample parking and within close proximity to two bus stops. Also Weis, and Domino's is right around the bend, an easy walk. Did I mention pets are allowed?! There is a small fee for dogs, and cats but it was free for me to house my bunny.
These apartments are perfect if you're looking for great neighbors, friendly and efficient staff, easy access to campus and downtown, and beautiful outdoor space. Want to bring your fur baby with you to your new home? No problem! These apartments are pet friendly and are within walking distance of multiple "bark parks"! With the bus route right out front, you'll never feel disconnected from downtown. This complex also offers plenty of parking spaces so you won't have to drive in circles hoping for a space to open up. The area is quiet, with bikes paths and walking trails nearby. They're also just around the corner from the grocery store and the YMCA. The staff here is amazing. If you have a problem, they have a quick solution. The grounds are well maintained and are kept decorated for the season with flowers, gourds, or holiday lights. We even have edible gardens that are available to all tenants in the summer! If you're looking for a lively town, but a quiet home, look no further!
The apartment complex is great for a variety of people. There are students, grad students, young professionals and families. Second and Third floors have hardwood throughout and it is easy to clean and looks great. My 2 cats love the wide window sills so they can people watch as well as dog, bunny and other animal watch throughout the day. Maintenance is quick to respond to requests and explains things to you if you are home when they are doing the work. The office is very welcoming and laid back. Office staff are very understanding of issues that may come up with not being able to pay rent on time. The office dog is the cutest and loves to greet everyone. Very pet friendly place and not unreasonable to have pets. ($150 non refundable and $20 a month per cat to have my cats) Great place for the price and very convenient to various places in the State College area!
You could definitely find a cheaper apartment in State College, but Lion's Gate is pet friendly. They're great about you having pets. Cats and dogs are both welcome. My cats love it here, we live in a basement apartment, so the window is at ground level. They come face-to-face with bunnies, ducks, chipmunks, and squirrels! They are good about responding to maintenence requests. One week, I was running low on money and one of my lightbulbs burned out. They brought me a new one for free!! Also, I wanted to convert my closet into another room, and they installed an electric outlet in my closet for me (for free, once again!!). If I have problems making the rent, they are good about letting me pay in installments. They are very nice and understanding, Helen (the manager) especially. Everyone is very friendly. I love my apartment. You'll have a hard time finding a pet friendly place in State College that's as nice for the price. Another nice thing is that there's a range of different kinds of people living here. There's graduate students, some students (not that many, surprisingly), young working professionals, and families too! There's a baby in the apartment above us, but it's never loud and I don't hear footsteps or anything. Walls are not thin at all, It's very peaceful. I love it here!
The prices are in the higher side for living outside of downtown, however, the quality of service is reflected with this price. I have a studio and my one dog. Anytime something is wrong they have maintenence to my door within a half hour. During the week there is always about 5 people on the maintenence crew. This complex has a lot of grass for everyone to walk their dog in. They have numerous potty stations positioned by every apartment building. It is really nice in the winter because the crew plows many doggie trails so the short dogs and myself can walk easily through the snow. There is an ashtray by every entrance keeping the area extra clean. It is convenient that the laundry machines advertorial credit card since I rarely have cash. I have never run out of hot water while showering. If you live on the first floor you get a discount in your rent. The rooms are pretty sound proof except by the front door. The ladies in the office with end up remembering what apartment you're in even though there are 17 buildings. There are three bus routes to campus and downtown and the bus stop is right by the entrance to the complex. All in all a nice place to live whether you're a student or not.
I have lived at Lion's gate for more than two years. It is a great place for graduate students and professionals. It is conveniently located on a CATA bus route with one of the highest frequency of buses in State College, and it within a few minutes walk to the YMCA and to the grocery store. Lion's gate personnel is very friendly and has always treated me with respect. Maintenance is quick and has always addressed effectively any issue I reported. The complex is clean and well maintained. Noise from upstairs neighbors is a small issue, but can easily be overlooked. I would highly recommend this place to graduate students or professionals in State College.
State College, a town where the apartments are overpriced but the students keep paying because they have to go to school. In this area, the best choice I can recommend is: Lions Gate. Although a bit pricey for one, the best deals are when utilizing at least 1 roommate. The staff is the friendliest and most helpful I've found in the 3 different complexes I've lived in town. The parking is a little cramped but they offer more visitors parking than most in State College. It sits walling distance from the local grocery, the YMCA, and some local restaurants. The bus stop is right at the edge of the complex too. This place is without a doubt, the best deal in State College.
With numerous well-kept flower boxes, community gardens, and large green lawns with gazebos, this apartment complex is one of the most aesthetically pleasing complexes in State College. The apartments are located along a frequented bus route and are only a five minute walk from a grocery store and the local high school. Additionally, Lion's Gate charges among the lowest rates per square footage. This is a quaint, quiet, and peaceful place for college students and families alike, and it's "your new home."
I have read the previous two reviews. I just cannot let them mislead innocent perspective tenants. Not to mention staffs, the quality of the apartment is the most important thing we should care about. The main thing is the noise. You can easily hear everything from all sides. The PRICES are NOT low compare to either executive house or imperial tower. Anyway, if you choose to live there. Be prepared to regret!
I lived here for two years and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Close enough to campus but also quiet. cheaper than anything else on waupelani besides executive house which is ick. the staff are really nice and friendly. they always would put stuff aside to talk with me and answer any questions I may have. whoever wrote the negative review about the staff, it must have just been an off day becasue I have never had a negative experience with them.
