Starkville is what you’d call a college town for sure. Home to a large student population focused on academics and sports, this city also houses numerous apartments near cool amenities. As you probably guessed, the gem of Starkville is Mississippi State University which is surrounded by bars, mom-and-pop eateries, boutiques, and bookstores.
When you live in Starkville, you’ll notice when the entire community gears up for game day. “Hail State” is a common greeting that echoes throughout the town, and it’s safe to say that a great deal of the community revolves around college sports like football. Locals, alumni, and visitors alike are often tailgating before a big game. On game day eves, New South Weekends in Starkville offer tons of activities from wine tastings to block parties.
MSU and surrounding neighborhoods have a lot of art and culture offerings. The Lyceum Series, presented by the university, features concerts, dance recitals, and musicals throughout the year.

Property Ratings at Avalon Apartment Homes
Avalon apartments was ok only because of an employee name Michael. He was very polite and caring. I've moved in 2022 and they made excuses to keep my security deposit. All their excuses were a lie. I really cleaned that apartment and I brought new stove dripping pans. I will never dwell there again.

Property Manager at Avalon Apartment Homes, Responded To This Review
Thank you for the lovely five star review. We are happy to see that you love your home here and appreciate you choosing Avalon Apartments.
I have lived here since 2015 and just signed another year lease. I live here because it is SAFE and the people are the best. The maintenance are there when you need them, the ladies in the office are great and everyone it always friendly. The amenities are great. If you are looking for a safe clean place to live this is it.
They are relatively nice units. My complaint is definitely not with the facilities (though we did have issues with ours being subpar when we first moved in). It has an excellent gym, pool, and recreation facilities (my only complaint with those is the fact that non-residents often hog the facilities that i’m paying for). My complaints are largely with the way this complex is run. It is hands down the worst place I’ve ever rented. Management has changed 3 times since I’ve moved in, and it has gotten progressively worst with each change. They frequently give you less that 24 hours notice that they will be entering your apartment (I once received less than 4 hours notice while I was at work that they would be entering my apartment before my shift was even over). They constantly email saying they will be doing inspections, then they reschedule several times. They don’t do repairs on time, but look for any excuse to enter your apartment. I’ve lived in different apartments for almost 10 years now. I expect to pay my rent, have annual (I’ll even take semiannual) inspections, and get timely repairs. Other than that though, I want to be left alone. Avalon does quarterly inspections, but they enter your apartment far more frequently than that. No one wants people entering their home all the time. It’s annoying to be babysat by this apartment complex, while at the same time never receiving the maintenance our unit actually needs. We also never receive notice about packages that come in the mail (which is fine if you are expecting a package. Not fine if a family member is sending something out of the blue or a friend is mailing you a surprise “will you be my bridesmaid” package). If you are considering Avalon, take it off your list. There are many, many apartment complexes in Starkville that charge far less for rent without the headache of dealing with poor managers and policies.
When I was looking at apartments, I was blown away by Avalon's amenities. After moving in, I still enjoy the spacious living spaces. I do not care for the lack of storage space, though. As a college student that is constantly traveling back and forth from my hometown, I found that I had nowhere to keep my suitcase in between trips. My other complaint is the management. They were young and acted mostly unprofessional. During my lease, management actually changed. During the change, some policies were brutally enforced, whereas they were over-looked before. Not to say that these policies were a bad thing, I think they were necessary; however, this abrupt change blindsided me finically. I moved in with a cat and went to the office at least once a month for about six months offering to pay the pet deposit. Every time, I was told that it was fine and that I didn't have to pay it. After the new management, I get a letter saying that I have a month to pay the pet deposit or risk getting evicted. I think this situation was handled very poorly. In addition to unprofessional management, the maintenance workers were EXTREMELY unprofessional and had a complete lack of respect for people's belongings and privacy. There are too many bad experiences with the maintenance crew to even list in this review. It got to a point where I did not feel safe in my own apartment. Obviously, my biggest complaint is the maintenance crew, everything else is so-so.
The apartment complex is okay especially with the extra facilities and such. Sadly, the management isn't as hands on or as responsive as I wish they were. The floors and walls are also tremendously weak and you can hear every person walking around constantly. For a student, these apartments are probably fine but for a member of a family like myself, I really am not that much of a fan.
The apartments are nice, but management is sub-par. We were told the apartents would feature laminate hardwood floors, but instead have peel and stick floors. The peel and stick looks nice but is not the same as hardwood floors. Storage space is lacking, the coat closet contains the hot water heater and has no room for coats. The outside closet is small and doesn't have enough room for things that would be put in the inside closet. The complex has a pretty nice work out facility and a big pool. All in all pretty nice apartments but be warned at what you are paying for.
In the 6 years that I have lived at Avalon, every expectation I have had about a residence has been met. There have been problems, such as a busted water heater and flooding from an upstairs neighbor's washing machine, but they have been dealt with in the best and most effective way possible. Everyone here has been nothing but friendly and helpful, and I could not recommend them more to anyone looking for a family friendly apartment in Starkville.
