Living in Americas

History

-

Americas sits within the eastside north region of El Paso, a city that became part of the United States in 1846. The conclusion of the Civil War brought a population increase, but also violence and a lawless nature to the city. El Paso authorities began enforcing the laws more strictly around World War I, leading to more development in the city's population and industries.

Americas doesn't have any art galleries or museums, but El Paso has a few for those interested in art or the history of the area. Annual events occur throughout the city, but none take place within this neighborhood.

Restaurants

-

Americas includes a diverse mix of affordable restaurants, with a focus on traditional Mexican meals and modern American favorites. For seafood made the Mexican way, check out Mariscos Playa Azul. Many dishes feature a whole fish and diners feel like they've been taken out to the ocean to eat a fresh catch. This restaurant keeps prices low, particularly for a seafood restaurant, and the sample platter for two gives you the opportunity to have a dinner date without breaking the bank.

Cabo Joe's blends foods from Mexico and America to create meals both unique and traditional. Try the flautas with fries for a spicy dish that goes well with a cold margarita. Not just a restaurant, Cabo Joe's doubles as a sports bar that stays open late. With a lively, casual vibe, it offers a great place to watch the game or grab a few drinks and meet people after dark.

Wing It Wings & Things remains a local favorite for chicken wing enthusiasts. Pick your favorite out of the 16 available sauces. Many patrons are torn between the green chile and famous red sauces, which come smothered over the meaty wings. Wing It carries numerous beers on tap and in bottles.

Transportation

-

Cars tend to be the most convenient travel method for this neighborhood, although public transportation works as an alternative for those without a vehicle. For those with cars, Americas has fast highway access, with Texas State Highway Loop 375 a short drive east. The highway loops around part of El Paso and connects with multiple highways along the way, making it a common starting point for trips and commutes. You can park on the street in this neighborhood, just read the signs for possible restrictions.

Sun Metro buses service El Paso, with routes 73 and 74 going through the neighborhood. Taxis and ride-share companies such as Uber also service the area.

You can take recreational walks around the neighborhood, but errands and commutes usually require another form of transportation. Most streets around the area don't have bike lanes, so any bike rides should be carefully planned.

Parks

-

A large park and a sports complex sit in the areas surrounding this neighborhood, giving residents a chance to get outdoors and work up a sweat. Head up Zaragoza Road to visit the El Paso County Sportspark. This park features baseball, T-ball and softball leagues, with options available for all age groups, including adults. Leagues operate year-round, and registration fees vary based on the league.

Those interested in other sports or just enjoying the outdoors check out Marty Robbins Park, a short drive west of Americas on Vista Del Sol Drive. This well-maintained park has a large outdoor area, with fields for any sport you want to play and a playground for the kids. The indoor recreation center features classes ranging from Zumba to karate. Fees vary based on the program, but you can visit the park free of charge. If you have a dog, feel free to bring him to the park as long as he stays on a leash. Every year, Marty Robbins Park holds an Easter egg hunt for kids, showcasing its family-friendly environment.

Cost

-

Americas carries a slightly higher cost of living than the El Paso average, with housing costs representing the most significant difference. A one-bedroom apartment typically rents for about $825, though you can find cheaper arrangements.

A Metro ride to the city center costs $1.50 for a one way ticket, and gas prices come in around 14 percent higher than the national average. A pint at the local pub usually costs about $3.

Shopping

-

The neighborhood doesn't have a central shopping location, instead featuring independent shops and markets scattered around the area. Sports fans should check out Big Bang Sports, a short drive up Zaragoza Road. Unlike many sports shops in the city, it doesn't completely focus on the Cowboys football team — though those in search of Cowboys gear can still find it here. With team cell phone covers, backpacks and bags here, expect to find a variety of unique ways to represent your team.

For grocery shopping, residents have a Walmart and a Walmart Neighborhood Market along Zaragoza Road, along with a Target north of the neighborhood. Americas doesn't have any farmers markets, but a couple take place downtown.
