History

-

Mystic River was settled by Native Americans before recorded history. Colonists soon followed, using fishing weirs to fertilize crops and catch herring. In 1631, The Blessing of the Bay was launched by the English from Mystic River's shores, followed by the building of the first bridge in 1637.

In 1774, 260 British men rowed up the river to the town of Somerville to remove all the gun powder stored there. This event became known as the Powder Alarm during the American Revolution. The Battle of Chelsea and the Battle of Bunker Hill took place in the river's watershed and beach respectively in 1775. As time progressed, the continuous building of shipyards and ships led to pollution and over-fishing, which eventually led to the elimination of commercial fishing.

Guided tours at the USS Constitution Museum and the Battle of Bunker Hill Museum provide guests a detailed account of Boston's famed history.

Built in 1780, this establishment has been recognized as one of the most historic taverns in America.
