Living in Bay Village

History

-

Formerly known as Church Street District, Bay Village was created in the 1820s when a portion of the Back Bay was filled in to support development. As other neighborhoods were built in the same manner, the entirety of Bay Village had to be raised several inches to prevent flooding issues. This resulted in older buildings having their entrances on the second floor.

In 1942, a fire broke out at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub, killing nearly 500 people and leading to strict fire codes across the nation. In 1809, Edgar Allan Poe was born on the street now known as Charles Street South. He did not live in the area for long, as his parents, who were well-known actors in the nearby Theatre District, moved to another city less than a year later.

Theater 1, located on the northern boundary of the neighborhood, offers the closest place for performances and presentations. The floor seating features smaller couches, with each space housing a workstation and power source. The Revere Hotel in Bay Village hosts the Boston Film Festival every September.
