After Katrina the move for me was a challenged. For some reason my family and I couldn't adapt to the other states so moving back to New Orleans was exciting for me. A lot of change has come to the city since then but I believe change is good . I've learned many things from this city , such as life skills. Im more than grateful to have been raised here.

History

-

Martin Behrman spent nearly 17 years as Mayor of New Orleans, from 1904 until 1920. He was elected again in 1925, but died less than a year into his new term in 1926. A large park in the neighborhood, Behrman Memorial Park, is also named for the former Mayor. Behrman grew up in the Algiers neighborhood, near present-day Behrman. In addition to being the longest-serving mayor in New Orleans, Behrman also served as a Louisiana delegate to the state's constitutional convention in 1898.

The oldest section of one of New Orleans' oldest neighborhoods is Algiers Point. This historic neighborhood features some beautiful architecture and several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the homes date back to the 1840s and are included on neighborhood tours. After moving to your apartment in Behrman, mark your calendar for the Algiers Point Fall Home Tour, which has taken place for more than 40 years. The tour includes historic homes, churches, and gardens. If you can't wait for that tour, the Algiers Historical Society's Walking Tour is self-guided, starting at the Algiers Ferry Terminal.

If you enjoy museums, you'll find a wide selection of them in New Orleans. Terrific museums to visit include the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the National WWII Museum, and the Louisiana Children's Museums. Other terrific destinations include Forbes Theater, the Contemporary Arts Center, Mardi Gras World, and the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.

Restaurants

-

Behrman may be a primarily residential neighborhood, but you'll still find some terrific restaurants to enjoy, especially near Delgado Community College and around Oakwood Center Mall off Terry Parkway. Cafe Du Monde is located here and well worth the visit. Claiming to be the "Original French Market Coffee Stand," Cafe Du Monde opened in 1862. If you stop in for a Cafe Au Lait, be sure to order some beignets to enjoy with it.

Rated one of the best Asian restaurants by New Orleans Magazine, Kim Son offers Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine with traditional favorites like Chop Suey, Egg Foo Young, and Fried Rice. If you'd like something a little different, try the Eggplant with Bean Cake in Clay Pot or the Gluten Puff Ball with Black Mushroom. This may easily become your favorite go-to spot after moving to your Behrman apartment; if so, work your way through the specialties. These include Shrimp Wrapped in Sugar Cane, Leaf Bounded Beef, and Beef, Shrimp, Squid Fondued in Vinegar.

Of course, this is New Orleans -- a city world-famous for its food. Living in Behrman, you are just a bridge-crossing away from some of the best restaurants in the country, such as GW Fins, Doris Metropolitan, Commander's Palace, Shaya, Atchafalaya, and Upperline Restaurant. After dinner, have a drink at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop -- it is a must-see. This is the oldest building in New Orleans and the oldest bar in the US, built around 1722. And with a 300-year history, there are (of course) rumors of ghosts.

Nightlife in New Orleans is as legendary as its food -- just head to the French Quarter and walk along Bourbon Street. You'll discover jazz clubs, taverns, sports bars, saloons, and the Old Opera House. The Old Opera House is a terrific live music venue -- many famous artists started out playing here, and some still come back to hop on stage for an impromptu performance.

The Smoothie King Center is the place to go for terrific concerts and sports events, such as NBA games, WWE events, and performances by celebrity artists like Selena Gomez, Rihanna, 5 Seconds of Summer, and R. Kelly. And if it is fall and it is game night, the place to be is the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. This is home to the NFL's New Orleans Saints, and if you are moving to New Orleans, then you'll become part of the "Who Dat" Nation.

When you're in the mood to do a little gaming, head to Harrah's New Orleans. In addition to the lively casino featuring more than 2,100 slot machines and over 90 table games, Harrah's includes bars, restaurants, a hotel, and live music.

Transportation

-

Highway 90 curves alongside the western edge of Behrman, taking residents directly into Downtown New Orleans. For those who prefer mass transit, bus stations are scattered throughout the area. They are so plentiful that you'll likely be within walking distance of one from a variety of Behrman apartments. Enjoy walking, bicycling, and jogging along the river via the Mississippi River Trail.

Parks

-

The main park in the neighborhood is Behrman Park. This large park is the heart of the neighborhood and a terrific place for community events. The park includes a recreation center, an arts and crafts room, a stadium, indoor basketball courts, sports fields, a playground, tennis courts, and a swimming pool.

The Mississippi River Trail provides a paved walking, jogging, and bicycling path along both sides of the Mississippi River. The trail extends roughly 60 miles and can be accessed at Algiers Point. Across the river from Algiers Point, Woldenberg Park has beautiful river views and is the location of music festivals and performances.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Jackson Square is a historic landmark and a must-visit after moving to your Behrman apartment. This park, which was built in 1721, is designated as one of "America's Great Public Spaces," and it is the site where the Louisiana Purchase was made. Today, Jackson Square hosts the French Quarter Festival, concerts, and other special events.

Cost

-

Your Behrman apartment will be affordable -- the average rent is about $768, which is only slightly higher than the New Orleans average of $764. Since Behrman is a residential neighborhood, most people commute to work. The average commute time is about 30-35 minutes. There are a few local employers, such as Delgado Community College and the US Coast Guard Sector Headquarters.

Shopping

-

Oakwood Center, located at the south end of the neighborhood, contains stores like Dillard's, Foot Locker, Old Navy, Champs, and Earthbound Trading Company. Just across the river, the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk provides amazing river views and a huge selection of stores that include Steve Madden, LOFT Outlet, Lucky Brand, Chico's, Gap, Charlotte Russe, Cajun Kids, Fat Tuesday, and the Creole Queen.
