In the late 19th century, Borough Park mostly consisted of small cottages constructed by Electus Litchfield. Back then, it was known as Blythemore. Around 1860, a steam railroad (today's BMT West End Line) connected the area along its route from Greenwood Cemetery to Coney Island. When State Senator William H. Reynolds purchased land on the northeast side of Blythemore and named it Borough Park. Eventually, Blythemore was absorbed into this larger community. The neighborhood's first synagogue was built at the turn of the century, and the construction of the New Utrecht Avenue train line spurred more development after World War I.

The Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Children's Museum are only a few minutes away from Borough Park. Residents appreciate the annual Great GoogaMooga Festival in Prospect Park, only five minutes away. The event features live music, tasty food from local vendors, and plenty of family-friendly fun.

Though the neighborhood nestles close to Fort Hamilton Parkway and Ocean Parkway, residents also appreciate access to the New York City Subway BMT West End Line, which makes stops at 55th Street, 50th Street, and Fort Hamilton Parkway. LIRR's Atlantic Terminal station and plenty of available bus routes can also be utilized throughout the neighborhood. Close proximity to Fort Hamilton Parkway and Ocean Parkway are two perks of living in Borough Park. Call Uber, a popular taxi service, to schedule your next trip. For a normal taxi, make sure to call ahead, as hailing one from the street can be difficult.

Gravesend Park, which borders the neighborhood on its southeast side, is named for the first English settlement in New York.
