West Virginia’s artsy college town surrounded by lush beauty

Artistic College Town Nature Suburban

Buckhannon is a small city just 40 minutes from Clarksburg. This beautiful suburban town is best known for its thriving arts scene and the town is extremely supportive. To keep the artistic spirit alive the town plans to incorporate 50 public art displays and nine have been completed so far. There are multiple spaces dedicated to the arts and there are over 10 arts organizations in town. Fittingly, Buckhannon is home to West Virginia Wesleyan College and the College of Arts and Music is very involved in the community, hosting events through the year.

Of course, many attractions and activities in town are centered on creativity. Watch a play by the Buckhannon Community Theatre or learn how to square dance to live music at the Opera House, an old renovated theater turned entertainment venue. Admire local masterpieces at the Artistry on Main gallery or create your artwork during one of the many art classes hosted year-round.

Buckhannon is a great place for nature enthusiasts. There is an abundance of natural beauty with several parks and community gardens in the area. The Buckhannon River Walk Trail, a local favorite, is a three-mile walkway with river access to the Buckhannon River, a dog park, and sports facilities for the college. Travel to Audra State Park only 25 minutes away for whitewater kayaking, trout fishing, camping, and more.

Buckhannon is known for its hometown festivals. The town is home to the Strawberry Festival, eight days of events honoring farmers in West Virginia that grow the state’s staple fruit.
