Living in Carmel Mountain

History

-

The United States acquired the area commonly referred to as Carmel Mountain Ranch, or "CMR" for short, from Mexico in the 1820s. It got its name from the ranches that occupied the area for several generations. The small community, tucked away in North County, experienced rapid growth coinciding with that of San Diego.

Every year, the Fairway Village area invites all to its "Holiday Magic at Fairway Village," a holiday light show. Check out the show to get in the holiday spirit, just don't leave without trying the hot drinks and snacks.

Restaurants

-

The area packs a variety of cuisine into a small neighborhood, with the Carmel Mountain Ranch Town Center a hub for several popular restaurants.

Visit Jalapeños Mexican Food, located at the town center, if you're in the mood for authentic Mexican fare. Use the free chips that accompany each meal to sample several different kinds of freshly made salsas at the salsa bar.

The sushi fanatics aren't left out either, as the town center also houses Boto Sushi. The simple yet elegant design fuses Japanese and American culture, combining Japanese decor with enough TVs to watch all the sports games. If you appreciate quality fish, make sure to try the sashimi combo, which allows you to sample a bit of everything.

If you're looking for something a bit more European, check out Cafe Luna on Rancho Carmel Drive. The home-made pasta and romantic atmosphere will give you the feeling of eating in a Mediterranean bistro. The servers make you feel at home and can accommodate groups of any size, making this restaurant perfect for dinner for two or a large family reunion.

The nightlife follows the personality of the rest of the neighborhood -- classy and laid back. The party scene can be found a short drive away, while this area provides residents with a place to grab a bite to eat, have a couple drinks and get to know people. You can do all three at Oggi's, a brewery, sports bar and pizza place. Stop by for a freshly made BBQ chicken pizza, then wash it down with a barrel-aged beer while watching the game on one of the 23 HD TVs.

Transportation

-

Quick access to freeways, the Ted Williams Parkway and public transportation make this area easy to travel around, giving commuters plenty of options.

You'll find it simple to drive around the neighborhood. Interstate 15 borders Carmel Mountain on the west and connects with Carmel Mountain Road, the primary road in the area. Ted Williams Parkway, running east and west, becomes California State Route 56 past Interstate 15.

You shouldn't have much trouble finding street parking, just make sure to read the signs for rates and time limits.

Bus routes 20 and 860 service the area, so you don't need a car to get around. Route 860 stops at the Sabre Springs/Peñasquitos Transit Station, where you can catch a ride to the rest of San Diego on the express lanes. Taxis and ride share companies like Uber service the area, although pick-ups may take longer due to its distance from the city center.

Central Carmel Mountain can be traveled easily on foot or on a bicycle. The outer edges have fewer bicycle lanes and tend to be more difficult to travel without a car. The Highway 56 bike path gives cyclists a 10.3-mile trail towards coastal San Diego.

Parks

-

The area makes the most of its space, housing a park, a recreation center and a country club that runs through most of the community.

With activities for all ages, you can bring the whole family to the Carmel Mountain Ranch Recreation Center. Sign up for a karate class with your kids, or drop them off at one of the youth programs while you work out in the fitness center. Kids love the Xtreme dodgeball class, which includes obstacles for an added challenge. If you want to bring your dogs, head over to the outdoor picnic area.

Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club showcases the natural beauty of the area. The golf course incorporates the characteristics of Carmel Mountain and provides spectacular mountain views. After playing a few holes, you can stop by the restaurant and eat right by the greens. You can also hold events at the country club. The mountain view terrace room provides an elegant setting for large events, while the smaller chandelier room can be used for more intimate engagements.
