Living in Chapel Hill Ben Davis

History

-

Chapel Hill, located in the Wayne Township outside of Indianapolis, experienced development and housing growth in the 1950s through the 1980s. The small community has deep ties to the local schools and churches. Every October, Chapel Hill United Methodist hosts a Fall Festival for community members. The event includes face painting, trunk'R treating and crafts. The event draws a tremendous amount of community support with students from Ben Davis High School, the Wayne Township Fire Department and local business professionals all volunteering to make the day a success.

Restaurants

-

A majority of the restaurants in the Chapel Hill neighborhood cluster on 10th Avenue, the main road.

For an affordable and high-quality Japanese dinner, Sushi Club features appetizers, rolls, sashimi and sake. The tempura shrimp serves as a crunchy and satisfying, shareable dish to start off the meal. Be sure to order the soft-shell crab roll early; it has a tendency to sell out. An all-you-can-eat deal makes the spot a favorite for family dinners, date nights or a meal with friends. The deal costs $19 to $21, depending on the night, for adults. This package comes with miso soup, appetizers and a selection of sashimi and rolls. The policy charges you $1 for any piece of sushi left on the plate. Come hungry, and order wisely.

With 1980s decor and recipes that have not changed in decades, Noble Roman's Pizza conjures up nostalgia for lifelong residents and newcomers alike. The establishment touts plenty of coin-operated video games, a jukebox and a quintessential salad bar. This all makes for the perfect setting for children's birthday parties or a night out to watch the game. Breadsticks with jalapeno cheese and deep-dish pizza make for an indulgent meal to cheer on the Colts or Pacers. When it comes to desserts, Sweet JoJo Frozen Yogurt and Cup Cake whips up a little, or a lot, of everything. Daily you can pick up classic baked goods; red-velvet and carrot cupcakes prove favorites. They also make turtle-cheesecake truffles and truffle-topped cupcakes to round out the case items. To balance out the take-home treats, fill up your fro-yo cup for a frozen treat on a hot Midwestern day. The options and flavors change seasonally.

If you need to take the family out for a celebratory dinner or grab take-out after a day of soccer games, try Fazoli's. The Italian eatery keeps busy families in mind with quick service and hearty meals. Chicken Parmigiana and twice-baked lasagna leave you satisfied and full.

To catch a game, grab beers with friends or celebrate after a long week, head to Rookies Sports Pub to enjoy a night out. The low-key spot has a pool table, darts and multiple televisions, allowing for plenty of bets and competition. Make the bet even more lucrative, and wager a bucket of beers.

The small neighborhood does not have a grocery store or farmer's market. Just a short drive away, both Kroger and Marsh Supermarkets provide ample options for food and errands. The Kroger Store, a Midwest staple, has a deli, bakery and variety of produce options. The chain carries both standard and organic products. This specific location also has a pharmacy and beauty section. From mascara to mops, find it here. At Marsh, service with a smile happens down every aisle. With a focus on fresh produce and excellent customer service, the chain also focuses on affordable pricing. If you need a locally sourced vegetable or party tray for the Super Bowl, they have the options.

Transportation

-

Most residents drive around the neighborhood when running errands or heading out of the area. Many businesses have parking lots, with off-street parking being free and easy to find. The restaurants on 10th avenue, the main throughway, proves walkable from the residential areas and schools. During warmer months, watch for children and families biking up and down the streets, or for after dinner fro-yo.

Easily access Interstate-465 from the heart of Chapel Hill. Cabs do not frequent the neighborhood and can rarely be hailed. If you need to head into the city or go to the airport, call ahead to order a cab, or use the car-service application Uber on your smartphone.

Parks

-

With so many schools having playgrounds that students can access, Chapel Hill only has one community park. Chapel Hill Park has a large field where kids can play soccer, baseball or tag. On longer summer nights, you might even see them playing red rover or Marco Polo. If you need to bring lots of gear or a pack of children, the parking lot makes logistics much easier. The field does not have fencing; owners comfortable letting their dogs off-leash have a good amount of room to let their pets play and get energy out.

Cost

-

The cost of living in Chapel Hill comes in lower than expenses tally up in the heart of Indianapolis. Being outside of the city drives down the cost of living, allowing you to spread your dollar and maximize the budget. A one-bedroom apartment rents for an average of $556. A bucket of beers of Rookies costs less than $10. When you need to fill up, a gallon of gas costs 12 percent less than the national average.

Shopping

-

The family-centric neighborhood of Chapel Hill does not have a busy shopping scene. While several large chains allow residents to pick up staples and household items, boutique stores remain limited. Stores with high-price tags or luxurious items cannot be found in this area; instead, the shops reflect the busy lives of the middle-class residents.

The bigger grocery stores of Walmart and Kroger give the Chapel Hill locals their fresh produce and daily necessities. For locally grown fruits and vegetables, residents can travel 20 minutes north to the Crooked Creek Farmers Market. The market is open on Wednesday evenings.

Not every store in the area is a large chain, however. Bicycle Outfitters Indy takes care of all your cycle needs. From wheels to reflectors, you can spruce up your bike or buy a new one. If do-it-yourself repairs and maintenance don't fit into your wheelhouse, the knowledgeable staff can tune up your cruiser or mountain bike.

Whether you need books, memorabilia or gifts, Downtown Comics has something for everyone. The welcoming shop has a knowledgeable staff, and friendly patrons often frequent the shop. You see regulars who love to engage and discuss books, old, new and coming.
