History

-

Modern-day Greensboro incorporates the site of the Battle of Guilford Court House, which was a strategic victory for American forces during the Revolutionary War. Later, Greensboro integrated railroad services into its infrastructure, creating a transportation hub that delivered throughout South Carolina. After the Civil War, northern industrialists further developed Greensboro from quaint village to busy city, installing denim and flannel factories. Delwoods Park, in the center of the city, served as a residential area for factory workers.

Greensboro Historical Museum, 10 minutes away on Battleground Avenue, explores Greensboro's local history with recreated areas of former Greensboro streets, military history, firearms, and clothing. On Lawndale Avenue, Greensboro Science Center houses an aquarium, museum, and zoo, with exhibits and presentations surrounding ancient wildlife, biology, and meteorology for children and adults.

Restaurants

-

Battleground Avenue is lined with restaurants and bars. For over 80 years Stamey's Barbecue has supplied Delwoods Park and Greensboro with chicken and pork barbecue prepared on a pit over hardwood coals. Slowly-prepared meats require 8 to 10 hours of cook time and get smothered in Stamey's secret sauce or "dip." Crispy hushpuppies accompany meals and pre-packaged sauce and desserts recreate this Greenboro staple's dishes at home. The tried-and-true large portions of Stamey's simple traditional barbecue menu, finger-licking-good tangy sauce, and low prices cause large lunch and dinner rushes, so come prepared to wait for a table.

Locally acclaimed contender for best Greek dining in North Carolina, Mythos Grill on Battleground Avenue treats residents with big flavors in a deli setting. Mythos imports oils, wine, cheeses, olives, herbs, and spices directly from Greece to create culturally accurate dishes. The daily-made Avgolemono soup, a blend of egg yolks, chicken broth, and lemon juice, begins most meals in Mythos. Authentic dishes include pork prepared in olive oil like on streets in Athens. Others incorporate bechamel cream, a white sauce consisting of butter, flour, and warmed milk with hints of garlic and onion served over baked eggplant, potato, tomato, and diced ground beef. Mythos Grill serves Greensboro residents at two locations, both remaining true to traditional Greek preparation and dining.

After-hours drinks require a short drive on Battleground Avenue to 1618 Wine Lounge. This establishment welcomes after-dinner guests to share a drink and conversation. Impressive wine selections from around the world begin as low as $4 per glass. Cocktails like the Kentucky Shuffle with Eagle rare bourbon, sweet vermouth, angostura bitters, and Campari ice cubes adorn the reasonably priced menu.
