Downtown San Rafael is the heart of the city. This historic district is laden with landmarks, including several spots that were included in some of George Lucas’ early films before creating the iconic Star Wars franchise. Similar to other city centers, Downtown San Rafael is trendy, lively, and eclectic. Enjoy everything from falafel to fusion cuisine at one of downtown’s restaurants, have drinks with friends at a wine bar, or curl up with a good novel at a coffee shop. Visit a gallery in the arts district, which is anchored by San Rafael City Plaza, a popular gathering place for concerts and a weekly farmers market. And of course, there are plenty of festivals and holiday celebrations held in the heart of the city as well.

Similar to many Bay Area neighborhoods, Downtown San Rafael rentals are typically more expensive with lofts and high-rise apartments available for rent, but there are more affordable options available as well. History

-

Like many California cities, San Rafael grew up around a Catholic mission. Mission San Rafael Arcángel was built in 1817 as an adjunct to the mission in San Francisco. It was abandoned in the mid-1940s and eventually demolished. A newer mission stands on Fifth Avenue.

During the hippie heyday of the 1960s, many artists and entrepreneurs tired of the influx of newcomers to the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco moved across the Golden Gate Bridge to Fairfax, Larkspur and San Rafael. Notable residents of the area include Fillmore founder Bill Graham, sci-fi novelist Phillip K. Dick, Metallica lead singer James Hetfield, musician Carlos Santana and the legendary Janis Joplin.

To know more about the history of San Rafael and Marin County, visit the Marin History Museum, one block north of Fifth Street.
