History

Established at the turn of the century along a newly constructed streetcar route, East Bde Maka Ska was once known as East Calhoun. In August 2021, the neighborhood voted to rename their community to honor the history of the Dakota people.

Transportation

The Metro Bus Rapid Transit's Orange Line runs east of East Bde Maka Ska along Highway 35. The closest stop at Lake St. Station sends passengers north to downtown Minneapolis or the opposite direction, to the suburbs of Bloomington and Burnsville. One of the city’s busiest transit centers, Uptown Transit Center on Hennepin Avenue sends buses out to the University of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Interstate 35, several blocks east of East Bde Maka Ska, drops you into downtown in approximately 10 minutes.

Due to its size, pedestrians have no problem walking around East Bde Maka Ska. For cyclists, the Midtown Greenway bike route provides a scenic ride along Lake Street.
