Living in Edgefield

History

-

The City of Canton holds historical significance within several arenas. The National Football League first began here in 1920, and it was also the home of 25th-president William McKinley, who was part of the front-porch campaign along with presidents James A. Garfield and Benjamin Harrison.

Always more of a residential community since its birth, the Canton area and all its neighborhoods gather often for community events, such as the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant. To learn more about the history of the area, the McKinley National Museum and the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum allow guests to explore artifacts and memorabilia that provide insight into the life of the late president as well as how the city came to be.

Restaurants

-

Traditional American diners and ethnic restaurants lie throughout the neighborhood and its surroundings. On 30th Street NW, the Jasmine Asian Bistro provides its guests with a large dining area full of white linen spreads and wooden chairs. Fresh sushi and other authentic Asian dishes can be enjoyed inside the restaurant or at home through takeout. Start your meal with a seaweed salad and dive into some yellowtail jalapeno for only $15.

Kabab and Curry on Whipple Avenue serve its guests genuine Indian cuisine topped with the best halal meat around. Often times, the diner proffers coupons on its website to draw in newcomers and provide a price break for regulars. The fresh garlic naan and the Bombay sitar tend to be what keeps those regulars coming back. The bright dining room and ample amount of seating make dining in easy and reservations rarely necessary.

By heading 11 minutes south to the center of Canton or even heading north towards Lake Erie and Cleveland, you'll find that nightlife thrives almost everywhere in Northern Ohio. For live music and cold brews, head over to the Buzzbin Art and Music Shop on Cleveland Avenue. The shop sells local art, holds live acoustic performances and has three nitro taps and 11 standard taps.

Transportation

-

Cleveland Avenue, I-77 and Malone Parkway all make traveling in Edgefield quicker and more convenient. Along with sidewalks, safe side streets throughout the neighborhood, and plenty of taxi services throughout the area, walking, using public transit, or taking a personal vehicle all make for sufficient means to get around. Plenty of free parking makes it simple to stay at any destination without the worry of being towed or fined.

Uber services the area for those who prefer travel by private vehicle, while the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) also provides cheap rides to Cleveland and other major cities, with many different routes. Hailing cabs proves difficult due to its northern location in downtown Cleveland.

Parks

-

The Cleveland area holds one of the most noteworthy park systems in the nation. The Cleveland Metroparks provide residents of the area with many different trails, exercise-centric areas, dog parks, playgrounds, athletic fields and more. The primarily free of charge parks supply locals with a sense of departure from urban living, allowing them to escape into nature.

In addition to the multitude of outdoor options in Cleveland, Canton has several options of its own. Right next to The Raisin Rack, sits Covered Bridge Park, and just minutes from there lies Spiker Park. Both parks provide locals with open spaces and trails. Spiker also has a golf course with 19 holes for the many golf enthusiasts that reside throughout the neighborhood.

Cost

-

Residents enjoy the cheaper cost of living while still being near enough to all the excitement of Akron, Canton and Cleveland. A one-bedroom rental averages at about $593, which remains significantly less expensive than that of downtown Cleveland’s rentals. Grabbing a pint in Cleveland sets you back $4 to $5, and the price remains similar in Edgefield unless you hit up a happy hour at one of the many pubs available.

Uber provides rides to Cleveland for about $129 with UberX. For cheaper public transport, jump on SARTA for a ride to Cleveland for less than $3 per one-way trip. Meals cost about $10 a plate when you dine at a neighborhood bar or restaurant.

Shopping

-

Shopping provides an endless amount of options throughout the community. While Edgefield remains more of a residential area, the specialty shops and other small stores make for some unique shopping excursions. Music shops, tattoo parlors, thrift stores and mainstream shopping centers such as the Belden Village Mall make up a majority of what you'll find around Edgefield. At Belden Village, you'll find departments stores Macy's, Dillard's, and Sears as well as mall staples like American Eagle, Francesca's and Forever 21.

On Whipple Avenue, a street where most of the excitement lies, you'll find New Vintage Music. This shop sells musical instruments, amps and other accessories. Even classes make themselves available to those who want to learn an instrument. If you have the money to put forth, you can also have a guitar custom designed.

Giant Eagle and Buehlers provide the neighborhood and surrounding areas with mainstream grocery shopping, while smaller markets sell locally grown and butchered foods. The Raisin Rack Natural Food Market sells health-conscious foods. Organic, vegetarian and vegan options make it possible to meet your personal dietary requirements. Bulk foods such as grains and herbs can also be purchased.
