West of the Appalachian Mountains, Elizabethton is a small rural college town filled with American history. The area is affordable and surrounded by an abundance of lush greenery ideal for outdoor activities. Hike or birdwatch at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park, the first permanent American settlement outside the 13 original colonies. Feed ducklings as you stroll along the Doe River Covered Bridge, the oldest bridge in the state. The bridge serves as a picnic, park, live entertainment, and festival space.

Every year the town gathers for the annual Covered Bridge Celebration in downtown. Vendors sell antiques and handmade crafts, while musicians perform on a stage near the historic bridge. If you’re looking for more adventure, visit Cherokee National Forest. This park has 177 campsites, 181 trails, seven picnic areas, two shooting ranges, and more. This small town is close to several colleges: Northeast State Community College, Milligan College, and East Tennessee State University.
