Living in Euclid-Green

History

-

Originally part of the city of Euclid, Euclid-Green was annexed into its own municipality in 1926 as a residential and commercial subset of the larger city. The two major areas are considered the "bottom of the hill," developed in the 1920s and the newer "top of the hill," built up in the 1950s and 1960s. The older section of the town tends to be more industrial as it was built along the Cleveland rail line in the early part of the century. The top of the hill blocks are more residential and known for scenic views and winding streets that are aesthetically pleasing for residents.

Restaurants

-

Euclid-Green has a lot of intriguing dining options stuffed into a very small area. There is not one "centralized" area to go eat and drink, but because of the small size of the neighborhood as a whole, it is easy to hop around from place to place if you so choose.

On the North end of town is Famous Gyro George restaurant where one can find some of the best Mediterranean food in the Cleveland area. Situated on the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 91st Street, Famous Gyro George is a small, family-owned establishment with an authentic menu and large portions at reasonable prices. Try one of their specialty Gyros such as the Famous Philly Gyro, pita bread filled with gyro meat, grilled mushrooms and onions topped with Swiss cheese.

For a night out, you will need to leave the township for greener (and wetter) pastures. Fortunately, there are a wealth of options in neighboring communities that will keep you busy and entertained. Just a few minutes to the north sits Beachland Ballroom and Tavern - perfect if you're a fan of live music and good food and drink. Beachland hosts weekly musical performances from various genres of music, many of which are local. They also offer brunch specials on the weekends and happy hours during the week. So no matter what your mood or when you're going, Beachland is sure to be a good time.

Transportation

-

Euclid-Green is one of the easiest neighborhoods to get around in the Cleveland area. It is only about two miles across from end to end of the neighborhood, so walking and biking virtually anywhere in the area is a very plausible option. Bike lanes are available, and Route 20 is the only main road that goes through the city. You may want to stay off this road as a pedestrian or a biker, but Euclid-Green is set up as a grid, much like the rest of the east side of Cleveland, that makes it easy to ride or walk through safe residential streets and cut to the main road whenever you need to.

ABC Taxi, Wolley Cab Services and Uber, among others, service the area, though it is recommended that you call ahead. Public transportation that comes directly to Euclid-Green is limited to a couple of different bus routes. These rides range from a $2 one-time ride fee and vary on up based on the number of rides/length of the bus pass you choose to purchase. You can ride the bus to a number of different stops in the area or to one of the east side Regional Transit Authority stops that will take you directly downtown.

The only highway close to Euclid-Green is Interstate 90, which services most cities on the east side of Cleveland. I-90 will take you directly downtown where you can pick up any number of other highways to get you around. The only downside to this is that because I-90 is the only way to get to the east side from downtown, traveling during rush hour will be heavy and slow as everyone has the same travel plan.

Parks

-

Because of its location adjacent to Lake Erie, the Euclid/Euclid-Green area has a number of parks with beaches that create beautiful scenery and opportunity for enjoyment in the summer months. Sims Park and Euclid Beach Park are both free, family- and pet-friendly and sit in historically significant parts of the city, particularly the latter. From 1895 to 1969, Euclid Beach Park was an amusement park that served the Cleveland area and was a staple of the community. The historical society does its best to maintain the memory of what was once such an important part of the community. Today, the park serves as both a historical site and a place to bring the family, cook out, and dip your toes in the waters of Lake Erie. There are also occasional events memorializing the park for what it used to be such as "Turn Back the Clock" carousel nights.

In addition to the beaches, Euclid-Green has made large investments in Duggan Playfield. This huge park offers something for everyone in the summer months including baseball diamonds, a swimming pool, and tennis and basketball courts. There are also pavilions to host events. This park is widely renowned as one of the most beautiful in the area.

Cost

-

The cost of living in Euclid-Green is virtually the same as Cleveland and slightly less than many of the neighboring communities. The average cost of a one-bedroom residence is $597 a month. This is the largest difference between the two cities as the average rental rate in Cleveland is slightly cheaper. Everything else in Euclid-Green in relatively equal to the rest of the cities in the area. Gas prices are below the national average throughout the Cleveland area. Beers at the bar will vary based on location, but will be very average. Places like Beachland Ballroom and Grovewood Wine Bar are slightly above average, as they offer other amenities other than just a bar, but there are also small pubs where you can get a beer here for $2 to $3.

Shopping

-

For your grocery needs, Dave's Supermarket has you covered. A Northeast Ohio-centered chain, Dave's offers quality products, good service and good prices. Marc's and Aldi are also both nearby but, like with many other necessities, you will need to venture to Euclid to find these markets. There are also a number of convenience stores around such as Rite Aid, CVS, Dollar General and Walgreens, and all are quickly accessible.

Euclid-Green doesn't have that many specialty stores within its limits. If you're a fan of vintage media though there are multiple stores in the nieghborhood that will fulfill your needs. Star Pop and Blue Arrow Records and Books are both nearby and sell vintage toys, music and books.

For local shopping, head to the Coit Road Farmers Market in East Cleveland. Coit Market offers producers a venue to sell their goods and the public a chance to buy food and other products made right here in the Cleveland area. If this sounds like a place for you, you'll need to plan a shopping trip around their very limited hours. Coit is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. all year round and Wednesdays from 10 a.m.1 p.m. from April to November.
