Local Businesses in my area are very expensive but I think the reason to that is because my are is made up of hispanics(mainly) so all the products we consume are brought from Mexico. Still they are super expensive. The service is really bad, most of local business owners do not know how to work with people.

I live in Silicon Valley so if you have the skill and education, you can totally get a good paid job, otherwise, it would be hard. Working at a grocery store will not pay you bills. Gaining the skill and apply them in the area, I am sure you would get a well pay job.

There are some ugly area in my town. A few gangs operate and that is scary. As long as you do not visit those areas, you should be safe, but if you get lost and end up there, it can be dangerous.
