I have been living here for 35 years. It has had its ups and downs but for the most part, it's a quiet neighborhood. The traffic on Flagler in the afternoon is a bit much but I have learned to avoid those hours. If I could live somewhere else I would but we own our home and don't want to get into the hassle of moving. Pros: -extremely central location to all main highways -mostly quiet people not many issues. -2 minutes from the airport. Cons: right by a main street -unkempt in certain areas. -lack of excellent restaurants -schools here are not good. We have always won lotteries for other schools. -

Living in Flagami

History

-

Located in Miami-Dade County, this neighborhood came to be when Miami became incorporated in 1896. Inhabited by indigenous people for thousands of years, northerners fled to the city during the 20th century. During this time, Miami and its surrounding neighborhoods began to prosper until the Florida land boom, the 1926 Miami Hurricane and the Great Depression all put a damper on local construction. Luckily, years of suffering did not last too long, as the population increased with World War II and the Cubans who fled from Fidel Castro's rule. Flagami houses the Bay of Pigs Memorial Park, in honor of American trained Cuban freedom fighters who lost their lives during the invasion of their home country in an attempt to liberate their countrymen from Fidel Castro's oppressive communist regime. The town is also known for Flagler Memorial Park, which was established in 1934 as a 32 acre place for loved ones to be laid to rest.

The area has flourished into an international, financial and cultural center for all who reside here. Although no museums lie in the immediate area, travel downtown to Miami and visit the HistoryMiami museum, which showcases the rich history of South Florida. Celebrate the arts scene at the annual Coconut Grove Art Festival just a few miles away from Flagami.

You'll find anything from salads to sandwiches to seafood. For under $5, you can get two eggs, home fries, a protein and cafe con leche and tostada. Seafood lovers indulge in the lobster, shrimp, calamari and grouper.

Flagami has its fair share of sports bars, dance clubs and pubs. Locals hit La Gitana to watch sporting events with friends while sipping on an ice cold brew. Those looking to dance hang out at Siboney Discoteca, which features salsa dancing, Cuban mambo, Arabian nights and conga dancers. Bottle service is available, but you will not find a VIP area. Get there early on a Friday or Saturday night if you prefer to lounge at a table rather than dancing.

Other club venues include Deja Vu, Petit Chalet Lounge and Club 45.
