Historic Walkable Architecture Commuter Public Transportation

Grand Lake, sometimes referred to as the Grand Lake District, is one of the last remaining historic areas of Oakland. Nestled along Interstate 580 in northern Oakland, you’ll recognize the area for the unmistakable Grand Lake Theater. The theater is one of the East Bay Area’s biggest landmarks, namely for its neoclassical architecture and signature marquee. Grand Lake residents enjoy an almost small-town atmosphere with a walkable layout combined with long-standing homes and landmarks within this signature East Bay neighborhood.

Grand Avenue remains the neighborhood's main thoroughfare with most other streets winding through the hillsides. You’ll find historic homes and apartments in free-standing buildings. Commuting into San Francisco is easy thanks to the interstate to the south, Interstate 580. Residents also have access to public transportation via BART to commute around the rest of Oakland.

Oakland gained its name from the large parcel of land held by the Peralta family known as "Encincal," which translates into "oak grove." California gained statehood in 1850 and 4 years later, Oakland incorporated as a city. In the later part of the century, the coming of the transcontinental railroad made Oakland a hub for many West Coast connections.

The streetcar came to Grand Park at the turn of the century, bringing many new residents wanting a new start after fleeing the San Francisco Earthquake of 1904. In 1926, the historic Grand Lake Theater opened, putting the neighborhood on the map.

Grand Park contains a small art presence with a few galleries and design stores. The neighborhood doesn't contain any museums, but a large cluster resides on the opposite side of Lake Merritt, including the Oakland Museum of California, African American Museum and Museum of Children's Arts.
