Hilton Head is a shoo-in for lovely beach oases

Coastal Restaurants Tourism Shopping South Carolina

Talk about an oasis. The city of Hilton Head is on a shoe-shaped island just northeast of Savannah, GA. Rich in history, the island was once a prominent base during the Civil War. Today, it’s a desirable beach town for tourists and residents alike. Unlike other beaches, Hilton Head’s aren’t overcrowded during peak season, so you can still enjoy your backyard water activities without the need to hide in your apartment from tourists.

Even though the city is made up of many gated communities, the town has public beach access points all across the island. Golf enthusiasts will have the time of their life in Hilton Head since it’s a classic golfing community. Tournaments are often hosted at Sea Pines Resort, and the city swoons its residents with wine tastings, festivals, and performances by the local orchestra.

Hilton Head’s famous red-and-white striped lighthouse is in the Harbour Town Marina, a vacationers’ hotspot with exceptional waterfront restaurants. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss are a staple in the city, and many beaches have free parking and are in walking distance of neighborhood eateries. Any craving imaginable can be satisfied on the island – from low-country boils, gourmet seafood, Italian, and barbecue.

The city itself is pretty accessible; though to travel off the island, you’ll have to use U.S. 278. Coligny Plaza is right next to Coligny Beach Park, and is a popular shopping destination with gift shops, candy stores, and world-class eateries. Residents also enjoy their trips to the Tanger Outlet Mall, Coastal Discovery Museum, and exploring the historic Stoney Baynard Ruins.
