Hubbard, OH Area Guide

Named for Nehemiah Hubbard, Jr., a Connecticut Land Company agent from Middletown, Connecticut, the city traces its origins to 1801, when Samuel Tylee and his family became the first settlers of the township. Early residents were largely farmers from New Jersey who cleared forested land for crop production, and a post office named Hubbard was established in 1826.

Walking through downtown today, you can still spot architectural traces of the city's early-twentieth-century growth -- American Foursquare homes with long driveways and detached garages lining residential streets. When Youngstown's steel industry declined in the mid-1900s, Hubbard's locally owned shops and restaurants kept the downtown district going, preserving a commercial streetscape that still rewards exploration.

Downtown Hubbard has earned a regional reputation for one thing above all else: pizza. With more than eight pizza shops within a small footprint, the concentration of pies per block is genuinely unusual for a city this size.

Beyond pizza, the dining scene includes spots for homestyle breakfasts, with one local diner operating out of a converted train car on Main Street -- a dose of character that makes the morning routine a little more interesting. The annual Taste of Hubbard brings residents together to sample the breadth of what area kitchens have to offer.

Interstate 80 is the primary highway connection for Hubbard residents, linking the city to the broader regional network and putting the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport within about 20 minutes. Highway 62 runs west from West Liberty Street directly into Downtown Youngstown, a roughly 15-minute drive.

For longer trips, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are each about an hour away by car. Most daily errands are handled by personal vehicle, though the compact downtown footprint means some destinations are reachable on foot.

Harding Park anchors Hubbard's outdoor scene, spreading across more than 37 acres with tennis courts, soccer fields, basketball courts, and a bandstand that hosts summer concerts. When winter arrives, the park's hills become a favorite sledding spot.

Golfers have two solid options close by: Pine Lakes Golf Club and Deer Creek Golf Course, the latter of which includes a driving range. A short drive away, McGuffey Wildlife Preserve offers a quieter natural escape, and Mill Creek Park on Lake Glacier -- about 15 minutes out -- expands the options considerably with waterside scenery and walking paths.

Rental rates in Hubbard run well below both national and Ohio statewide averages, making it one of the more affordable options in the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area. Studios, one-bedrooms, and two-bedrooms are available at price points that leave room in a monthly budget, and the overall cost of living reflects the broader affordability of northeastern Ohio's smaller cities.

Along Main Street, local specialty shops and small businesses form the commercial heart of Hubbard. Hubbard Plaza and Baldine Plaza, both within a couple of miles of downtown, cover everyday errands without much of a drive.

The community organization Shop Hubbard Ohio keeps things lively with two semi-annual events -- the Shop Small Spring Fling and Fall for Shop Small -- drawing vendors and shoppers downtown each season. From July through September, the Hubbard Ohio Farmers' Market on West Liberty Street runs every Saturday, offering fresh produce and locally made goods.
