Living in Idlewild Farms

History

-

East Charlotte's development is closely tied to the establishment of uptown. Circa 1770, early settlers to the area purchased and developed large plots of land for animal and vegetable farming.

Fast forward to 1960, and the city, fresh off an urban renewal project, saw an increase in businesses migrating into uptown. The need for middle class neighborhoods encouraged the development of communities like Idlewild Farms. The large corridors found all around the eastern part of the city were essential for commuters heading to work. East Charlotte has gone through economic ups and downs, and a new energy is once again helping to revitalize the area.

No museums or theaters sit within the community, but nearby lies the Hezekiah Alexander house — the oldest in Mecklenburg County. For festivals and other annual events, locals head uptown to experience the Queen City BBQ Festival or the Brewer's Ball.

Restaurants

-

Flavorful and distinct places to enjoy a meal are plentiful along the border of Idlewild Farms, though those seeking an upscale experience do need to head to the city center for a larger selection of these options. Asian and Mexican restaurants seem to pop up everywhere in East Charlotte, and everyone has her own favorite.

A quick drive west along Albemarle Road from East W.T. Harris Boulevard takes diners to Delicias Restaurante Latino. Known for affordable empanadas and the carne asada de Hondureña, Delicias satisfies any Latin American food craving. Don't forget to order flan for dessert, as it's rumored to be the best in town.

Travel south on East W.T. Harris to experience China Taste - one of the area's most popular and consistently good Chinese restaurants. Perfectly proportioned egg rolls served alongside extra-large helpings allow multiple diners to share one meal. Don't be deterred by the location or surrounding buildings; China Taste has long been considered a local gem, and the steady flow of patrons ensures a long life for this special place. Serving the best breakfast in Idlewild Farms, Sunrise Restaurant specializes in cooked-to-order eggs and smoked sausage. The decor appears outdated, but that doesn't stop restaurant-goers from raving about the $4 breakfast special and friendly service. Make sure to get here early as lines are notoriously long on weekends.

Though not lacking in nightlife options, many locals head west to the city center for clubs and trendy bars. Those looking to grab a drink close to home head to nearby Rack 'n' Roll Sports Bar. To watch the big game, sing some karaoke, or dance the night away to a live DJ, locals frequent vibrant Amber Karaoke Bar on Albemarle Road.

Transportation

-

Similar to most Charlotte neighborhoods, Idlewild Farms is not walkable and most residents use cars to navigate the busy corridors in and around the community. Those needing to utilize public transportation rely on Charlotte Area Transit System's convenient bus service. Over 15 bus stops can be found scattered along the busy roads of East W.T. Harris, Idlewild and Albemarle, and buses operate every 20 to 30 minutes from 6:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. during the workweek.

Taxi companies and Uber both operate within the neighborhood boundaries but must be called on for service. Abundant public parking is available along residential streets and within shopping centers.

Though the city has developed a long-term plan to expand bike transportation facilities for community members, Idlewild Farms does not contain bike lanes, so bikers should be cautious when attempting to navigate through the busy streets of East Charlotte.

West of the community in North Sharon Amity sits Cedarwood Park featuring walking trails, a playground, and a pond.

Positioned behind Albemarle Road Middle School, the small but popular Simmons YMCA provides a solid selection of exercise equipment and classes. This YMCA location houses a pool and kids aged 5 to 18 have the opportunity to join the swim team for a reasonable price.

East Charlotte hosts a number of community events for locals year-round including the Charlotte Museum of History's monthly History Talks lecture series and the Plaza Midwood Music and Arts Festival.
