Indian River is a charming neighborhood in Chesapeake, which became an independent city in 1963. It incorporated various community crossroads into a single city, but the neighborhoods retained their original community names, such as Indian River. The Elizabeth River runs along the north side of the neighborhood, with a tributary running down through the middle. Because of this, oysters and watermen were a big part of its history. Those are gone now, as the neighborhood is mostly residential, but the community continues to work together through the group The Friends of Indian River, actively involved in the community, planting trees, and keeping the roads waterways clean. There are a few small businesses in town, and residents sit equally between Chesapeake and Norfolk, where they’ll find job opportunities as well as dining, shopping, entertainment, and recreational opportunities.
As of March 2025, the average apartment rent in Indian River is $457 for a studio, $1,655 for one bedroom, $1,626 for two bedrooms, and $1,821 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in Indian River has increased by 1.8% in the past year.
