Living in Jessup-Howard

History

-

Jessup was developed in the 1600s, on the site of the historic Spurrier’s Tavern, a popular stop for George Washington just outside Baltimore. Back then, the area was known as Pierceland, but as the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad grew and started traveling to the area, the name changed to reflect the railroad's engineer, Jonathan Jessup. The railroad connected the community to the city and to nearby Washington D.C.

The community rose to popularity in the region thanks to the railroad and its central location, which began attracting several state seafood and produce markets, including a massive facility for the Giant supermarket. The community also hosted a massive state penitentiary, and while Jessup was known for many years for hosting this corrections facility, it was eventually torn down as the area became more residential.

The center of the Jessup dining scene lies along Washington Boulevard, where patrons can dine at a number of locally owned bars and restaurants that specialize in international cuisine from all over the world. Sit at the counter or order takeout at this made-to-order Mexican establishment, for a fast yet filling meal that has won numerous awards for its innovative twist on authentic cuisine.
