Friar Junipero Serra gave Santa Ana its name after the Gaspar de Portola expedition out of Mexico City in 1769, and the Mission San Juan Capistrano was established in the valley in 1776. The original Glenn L. Martin aviation company called Santa Ana home in 1912, before merging with the Wright Company in 1916. Today, Santa Ana remains the seat of Orange County, with one of the largest populations in the state.
