It is a safe place for us. The area is clean and well maintained. There is not a lot of pollution. It is a friendly place to live. Transportation facilities are good, and buses run frequently to the TMC and Mission Bend, connections to Downtown, which leads to a fair level of convenience. There are a number of grocery shops close by. Our overall opinion is that this is a good area for families.

Family centric neighborhood sandwiched between the beltway and 610. Just south of the worst of traffic, so getting around is better than most neighborhoods. Right along the bayou.

Great area with lots of trees and nice homes. It is diverse and has a decent sized lgbt population and large Jewish population.

I do not feel as though the police is present as often as they should be, however there is a station close and the only crime I have encountered is really just break-ins.

Living in Meyerland Area

History

-

In 1955, George Meyer developed 1,200 of the 6,000 acres of Meyerland. The community experience rapid growth in the years to follow. The area was developed for those wanting to live outside the city but not too far outside of the loop. At one point the area was considered a Jewish hub, and one of the city's oldest synagogues can be found in the area. The Hero Memorial, located near the Meyerland Plaza, was created in memorandum to Captain Gary L. Herod, who was flying a plane nearby and experienced engine failure. He chose to stay in his aircraft instead of crashing into the Meyerland subdivision, and this tragic decision cost him his life. The nearby NRG Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, hosts several events such as concerts and festivals throughout the year. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo occurs every spring and brings out thousands of visitors for concerts and a fair. Local vendors sell food and beverages, and there are games and rides for the kids to enjoy.

Restaurants

-

The many eateries in the area make it hard to choose, but there is something for everyone to enjoy in Meyerland. The options range from Mexican to Greek to Chinese. Enjoy a juicy steak at Saltgrass Steakhouse, or grab the kids and head for a pie at Angelo's Pizza.

Known for its Spanish charm, Los Tios Mexican Restaurant claims that it introduced Houston to frozen margaritas. This local favorite has been named the best Tex-Mex restaurant in the city. Try the cheesy enchiladas verdes with chicken and green tomatillo sauce or crispy fish tacos loaded with red cabbage and cilantro. Can't decide? Try both with a combination plate.

Look no further than Fainmous BBQ for some of the best barbecue in the area. A reasonable, family friendly place, the barbecue restaurant offers a down-South experience like no other. Choose from various smoked meats, such as ribs, pulled pork, sausage or chicken. Plus, you get to select a side, such as potato salad or baked beans. Don't forget to choose what sauce you want. Finish your meal off with a slice of sweet potato pie.

This laid-back community does not have a vibrant nightlife, but its convenient location allows for an easy commute to the Galleria area or Downtown Houston with some of the hottest nightclubs available.

Transportation

-

Houston Metro services the Meyerland area. Bus route 4, Beechnut, runs through the area, bringing riders to the Medical Center, Downtown and other premier destination points. Those commuting to work to Downtown, Uptown/Galleria or the Medical Center will appreciate the convenient location of the West Loop Park and Ride. Bus fare can cost up to $3.25 one way. Carpoolers with two or more passengers can ride the HOV lane to their downtown destination, making for a quicker commute than sitting in the chaotic Houston traffic. Uber and yellow cabs service the Meyerland area.

Parks

-

Brays Bayou Hike and Bike Trail runs alongside Meyerland, under the 610 loop and through the neighborhood. This popular trail attracts bikers and joggers from the area, and runs from Bellaire all the way to Brady Island near Buffalo Bayou. Godwin Park, located on Rutherglenn Drive, has a community center and playground. It hosts activities throughout the year, including the After School Enrichment Program that serves youth ages 6 to 13 years. This free program offers students somewhere to go after school, and there are activities for them such as arts, crafts and games. The community also hosts a Get Fit Program that encourages health living. There is no fee to visit the parks, though the parks are only open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. during winter months and extended to 9 p.m. in the summer.

Cost

-

Unlike many suburbs in Houston, Meyerland has experienced continuous growth. Though developers continue to build up the area and renovate older homes, the area still possesses its old charm. The value of the homes have had a significant increase over the years. One-bedroom apartments range from $500 to $1300 per month. This broad range is in part due to whether or not the apartment has modern updates and amenities and when the property was built. Newer properties demand higher rent and provide more amenities to their residents.

Shopping

-

The area consists of average-priced stores and shopping centers. No high-end shopping can be found in Meyerland. Created a few years after Meyerland was founded, the Meyerland Shopping Plaza has several shops, and its convenient location makes it a premier destination. The neighborhood Target is where many residents purchase their groceries and gives both residents and visitors a break from the fast-paced Wal-Mart nearby. Located off Braeswood, Nancy's Knits has handmade goodies that your mom or grandmother would love. The items can be purchased or you can even sign up for a course and make it yourself. At a low cost, you can learn to knit a scarf or blanket or whatever the item may be for that particular day. Yarn and other knitting accessories are available for purchase as well. Chain stores such as Charming Charlie, Chicos and Talbots Outlet as well as department store JCPenney's are all located in the neighborhood. Other neighborhood shops include home improvement and decor stores, children's clothing, and electronics and video games.

The nearest farmers' market is in Rice Village.
