Located just two miles north of Coney Island and stretches of sand along Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach, Midwood is one of Brooklyn's much-loved -- and surprisingly lesser known -- neighborhoods. In some ways, it's traditional New York: extremely walkable, bicycle-friendly, and near mass transit. It features tall, brick buildings with wrought-iron fire escapes, and the wide sidewalks lead past friendly neighborhood bakeries, delis, and boutiques. But in other ways, it feels much more suburban, with its tree-filled neighborhoods, elegant single-family homes, and a historic shopping district filled with locally-owned businesses.
Subway stations are scattered throughout Midwood and provide a 45-minute ride to Manhattan. Residents can drive south on Ocean Parkway to enjoy a day at the beach, and students appreciate easy access to Brooklyn College, set just outside of Midwood. This diverse melting pot provides a little bit of everything when searching for a restaurant, shop, or grocer. Among its claims to fame, Midwood's Edward R. Murrow High School is home to one of the nation's best chess teams. Because it isn't considered "trendy" by Brooklyn standards, Midwood remains surprisingly affordable -- another great reason to love this south-central neighborhood.
As of February 2025, the average apartment rent in Midwood is $1,494 for a studio, $1,848 for one bedroom, $2,407 for two bedrooms, and $3,974 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in Midwood has decreased by -0.4% in the past year.

I like the fact that it's a peaceful neighborhood. There are many stores nearby too. I see a lot of cats hanging around the area. I would like to see more clean streets because of the fact that I always see trash enter where I live.

Midwood is a great area to live in. There are many stores that you can go shopping in and there are parks were you can take a stroll. The public schools are great and provide amazing schooling.

During my short stay in Midwood, I was honestly surprised at the rustic - but inviting - outlook of the neighborhood. I love how many shops and services are available to me, whether they are a short walk - OR a short ride away. As noted in its namesake, I found Midwood to be perfectly situated in the middle of everything - not too busy, and not too isolated. I found this neighborhood to be a treasure and epitome of New York City, embracing diversity, opportunity, and beauty overall.
