Brooklyn's answer for the 'burbs

Walkable Bicycle-Friendly Mass Transit Beaches College

Located just two miles north of Coney Island and stretches of sand along Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach, Midwood is one of Brooklyn's much-loved -- and surprisingly lesser known -- neighborhoods. In some ways, it's traditional New York: extremely walkable, bicycle-friendly, and near mass transit. It features tall, brick buildings with wrought-iron fire escapes, and the wide sidewalks lead past friendly neighborhood bakeries, delis, and boutiques. But in other ways, it feels much more suburban, with its tree-filled neighborhoods, elegant single-family homes, and a historic shopping district filled with locally-owned businesses.

Subway stations are scattered throughout Midwood and provide a 45-minute ride to Manhattan. Residents can drive south on Ocean Parkway to enjoy a day at the beach, and students appreciate easy access to Brooklyn College, set just outside of Midwood. This diverse melting pot provides a little bit of everything when searching for a restaurant, shop, or grocer. Among its claims to fame, Midwood's Edward R. Murrow High School is home to one of the nation's best chess teams. Because it isn't considered "trendy" by Brooklyn standards, Midwood remains surprisingly affordable -- another great reason to love this south-central neighborhood.

I like the fact that it's a peaceful neighborhood. There are many stores nearby too. I see a lot of cats hanging around the area. I would like to see more clean streets because of the fact that I always see trash enter where I live.

I grew up here and it's home. It's worrying to be alone at night, but overall I have a nice community here. It's also easy to get to NYC with ample buses and trains going around.

Living in Midwood

History

-

Midwood was originally settled in 1652 by Dutch settlers, later giving way to the English, who conquered the area in 1664. Although it was settled over 300 years ago, the land remained mostly unchanged and undeveloped until it was annexed by the City of Brooklyn in the early 1890s. Shortly after, housing tracts grew, and the neighborhood started to quickly become more developed.

Midwood experienced another population burst in the early 1980s when immigrants from all over the world started to pour in. The largest groups were from former Soviet Russia, but many also came from Latin American, Eastern Europe and Asia, turning the area into a wonderful melting pot of culture and cuisine.

Many notable personalities hail from the neighborhood, including actresses Marissa Tomei and Michele Trachtenburg, actor and director Woody Allen and famous bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno. Many films and television shows have also chosen Midwood for shooting, such as Seinfeld, The Cosby Show and even the classic film The Godfather.

For culture in the neighborhood, the beautiful Brooklyn Museum covers over 560,000 square feet and hosts over 1.5 million pieces of art.

Restaurants

-

For some great food, the main district in the neighborhood runs down Avenue J. There, you can find what many in the area call the best pizza in all of New York. Di Fara Pizza on Avenue J has authentic New York-style slices, and residents have voted it the best pizza in the city in Zagat surveys for eight years straight.

For something that fits the unique diversity of the neighborhood, Moldova Restaurant serves the only Moldovan food in all of New York City. It has many famous Moldovan dishes, including sarmale ca la mama, known as stuffed cabbage in the United States, that simply melts in your mouth. It serves many types of fish and is famous for its carp served with a delicious garlic sauce. For dessert, it has all kinds of delicious Moldovan-style crepes filled with your choice of fruit and fresh-made crème.

For a night out, Ox Cart Tavern has a vintage bar feel and a huge selection of craft beers, fine wines and a large range of cocktails. It also has two huge TVs, making it a great place to grab some drinks with friends and watch a game. For live entertainment, Downhouse Lounge has more of a nightclub feel, with a live DJ who plays every Saturday night and a karaoke night every Wednesday.
