Living in Mount Vernon Triangle

History

-

In 1791, Pierre Charles L'Enfant developed the plans for Washington DC at the request of President George Washington. Mount Vernon Triangle was part of that original plan, although it was mostly rural at the time. In 1875, the Northern Liberty Market opened, causing the area to grow rapidly. This large, public market featured over 280 vending stalls and was located at 5th and K Streets. Soon after, streetcars were installed, and the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood saw new residents and new businesses move in. Center Market was destroyed in 1946, when a large fire broke out.

Luckily, many of the historic buildings have been preserved, giving the neighborhood its unique appearance. The Mount Vernon Triangle Historic District contains 24 buildings, dating back to 1869. Historic landmarks in the neighborhood include the Emily Wiley House, built in 1869, and the Jefferson Apartment Building, designed by George S. Cooper and built in 1899.
