History

-

Hawaiians made North Shore their home in 1100 due to the inviting ocean waters and lush lands. The area boomed immensely when Benjamin Dillingham built the Hale'iwa Hotel in the 19th century. The North Shore encompasses a rich history and legendary culture. Not only known for its surfing, the area also houses many historical sites. The Puu o Mahuka State Monument, built over 400 years ago, acts as one of the best known religious sites in Oahu. Waimea Valley showcases the enduring arts scene of the area with superb sculptures and botanical gardens, allowing visitors of all ages to enjoy the ambiance. Take part in some arts and crafts, lei making and hula lessons while learning about the rich history of the North Shore and Hawaiian culture. North Shore hosts three men's surfing competitions every December: the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing and the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

Transportation

The Likelike Highway (Route 63) serves as the most efficient route to the North Shore from Honolulu; plenty of signage leads drivers easily to the destination. The highway typically attracts a large amount of travel, so don't expect to get anywhere in a hurry. However, considering the island setting nobody should be in a rush, so relax and enjoy the scenery. Kamehameha Highway acts as the only main highway around the island. Remember, as a Hawaiian highway, it only has two lanes. Many locals prefer to drive their own vehicles and ride mopeds and bikes. Be advised that winding and narrow roads surround the area, so be careful if you choose to pedal or walk. Hawaii provides an excellent bus system if you want to get to and from Honolulu. Free parking in certain areas can be a bit congested but not impossible. Cabs make the easiest options to get to and from the airport, and Uber does provide service in the area if you want to call and schedule a pickup.

Another local favorite, Waimea Valley in Haleiwa, acts as a botanical garden. Enjoy the waterfall while viewing plenty of plants and peacocks. Take a walk with the pooch on the trail, or pay a fee and experience a cart ride up to the Falls for some stunning views and outstanding photo ops. People of all ages experience fun at Waimea Valley.
