The historic and prestigious Alabama A&M University is located about four miles north of Downtown Huntsville in the city of Normal. When the university began in 1875, it was as the State Normal and Industrial School, and the Normal Hill College Historic District contains 28 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who also designed Central Park in Manhattan and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
AAMU is a public, land-grant university located on 2,300 acres. As a historically black university, it adopted its current name in 1969. AAMU offers five undergraduate schools with 41 baccalaureate, 23 master's, and four doctoral degrees. Cheer on the AAMU Bulldogs at Lewis Crews Stadium, one of the largest stadiums in the state. The Bulldogs compete in NCAA Division I as part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Graduates of AAMU include Indianapolis Colts Defensive End Robert Mathis, singer Ruben Studdard, and Olympic Gold Medalist Jearl Miles-Clark.

Louis Crews Stadium is located off Memorial Parkway NW, while Chase Road wraps around the southern end of campus. A variety of shops and restaurants are on the north end of campus, closer to Winchester Road. Normal is an attractive city with rolling hills and plenty of park space.
