As the third-largest university in Georgia and one of the nation's 50 largest universities, Kennesaw State University continues to attract new students and plenty of buzz. This public, suburban university is roughly 20 miles northwest of Downtown Atlanta in Kennesaw. KSU began in 1966 as a small junior college to become a Doctoral Research Institution in 2016. In 2015, KSU merged with Southern Polytechnic State University. Students choose from 13 colleges, 52 bachelor degree programs, 21 master degree programs, and five doctoral programs.
The KSU Owls participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Big South Conference (football). The football team plays at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, which opened in 2010. The stadium also hosts rugby and was the site of the US vs. Uruguay matches during the 2015 Rugby World Cup. When the stadium isn't being used for sports, it hosts special events and outdoor concerts. Notable KSU alumni include Ty Pennington, James Wade, and Ryan Seacrest.

Located on the southeast side of KSU, Big Shanty is home to the Stone Summit Kennesaw (an indoor rock-climbing wall) and is directly north of the Town Center at Cobb shopping mall.
