As the oldest private university in Georgia, Mercer University was established in 1833. Mercer is a top-tier university, one of only four in the state. The university offers 12 colleges, with the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics and the Tift College of Education being its most popular. The Mercer Bears participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Southern Conference. Cheer on the Bears football team at Moye Complex, the basketball team and Hawkins Arena, and the baseball team at Claude Smith Field.

Macon, which is located in the heart of Georgia, is a terrific city, home to a variety of historic sites (like the Cannonball House, built in 1853) and popular festivals, such as the International Cherry Blossom Festival.
