When it was founded in 1902, Fort Hays State University (then known as the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School) was located on the site of a former frontier outpost known as Fort Hays. The fort operated from 1865 until 1889. In 1904, the campus shifted to its current location, which still includes part of the former fort. Today, Fort Hays State University is one of the fastest-growing universities in Kansas. The picturesque campus covers 200 acres with Big Creek winding through campus.
The Fort Hays State Tigers participate in NCAA Division II as part of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The football team plays at Lewis Field, while the basketball team calls Gross Memorial Coliseum home. For baseball games, head to Larks Park. Fort Hays State has nearly 60 conference titles.
Hays is a college town with plenty to offer, including the Fort Hays State Historic Site. The historic site sits on the south end of campus near Frontier Historical Park. Big Creek Trail follows Big Creek through campus, providing nearly nine miles ideal for hiking and bicycling. Most of the rentals are east of the university, extending from Elm Street and following Main Street into historic Downtown Hays.
