Located in Frankfort, KSU is located off I-64 between Louisville and Lexington. The campus is located off Main Street near Langford Avenue. The capital city of Frankfort offers a great location and a rich history. The city was established in 1786 and was named for Stephen Frank, a settler who worked on one of the Kentucky River's many fords. In 1780, Frank was killed during a skirmish with Native Americans; after the incident, the other settlers referred to the area as "Frank's Ford." Over time, the name morphed into Frankfort.
Today, historic Downtown Frankfort is picture-perfect, with brightly-painted historic architecture, brick-paved walkways, period lighting, and sidewalk cafes. The city is home to several terrific destinations, including the Kentucky Military History Museum, the Old State Capitol Building, and Liberty Hall Historic Site. Fort Hill, part of the Capital City Museum, is a large, historic park along the river that once served as a Civil War battleground. The park contains two Civil War forts, the Sullivan House, hiking trails, and picnic areas.
