That school is now Tulane University, one of the nation's most-respected research universities. Tulane still has civil service at its core -- it even requires students to participate in community service.

Considered one of the best universities in the country, Tulane offers about 70 degree programs in 10 colleges. The most popular majors include Biomedical Sciences, Health Professions, Social Sciences, and Business. The Tulane Green Wave are part of NCAA Division I as members of the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave football team plays at Yulman Stadium, the basketball team at Devlin Fieldhouse, and the baseball team at Turchin Stadium.
