NMU Northern Wildcats Public Comprehensive Dynamic Inclusive Active Nature

Northern Michigan University first opened as Northern Normal State School in 1899. Now, Northern offers high-quality academic programs in a high-tech learning environment with an emphasis on individualized attention. Students and employees at NMU are challenged to think independently and critically, develop lifelong habits, acquire career skills, embrace diversity, and become productive citizens in the regional and global community.

Located on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the city of Marquette, NMU is proximate to plenty of houses, townhomes, and apartments available for rent. Commuting to campus from farther distances is easy with access to U.S. 41.

Over 350 student organizations, a range of activities and events, NCAA Division II Wildcat athletics, intramural teams, club sports, and volunteer programs keep the NMU campus buzzing. Natural wonder abound just off campus, providing lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation like hiking, swimming, biking, and skiing at Presque Isle Park, Marquette Mountain, Lake Superior, and Echo Lake Nature Preserve. Milwaukee, Detroit, and Chicago are all less than a seven-hour drive from campus too.
