Located between East 5th Street and East 10th Street in downtown Greenville, East Carolina University provides fast access to Greenville's shops, restaurants, and theaters. East Carolina University, a public sea-grant university, is the third-largest in the state. The school was established in 1907, and its oldest college is its College of Education. The campus covers 530 acres and contains 158 buildings.
The East Carolina Pirates participate in NCAA Division I as part of the American Athletic Conference. Be sure to cheer on the Pirates at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium (football), Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum (basketball), and Clark-LeClair Stadium (baseball). You'll see plenty of purple and gold on game day -- and you might spot PeeDee the Pirate, as well. (The Pee Dee River is where pirates often gathered -- the most famous was Blackbeard.)
The neighborhoods around ECU are very walkable, complete with sidewalks and shade trees. The beautiful and historic Downtown Greenville is a terrific location, complete with period lighting and brick-paved walkways. To enjoy easy access to both ECU and downtown, look on the northwest side of campus from Reade Circle toward East 4th Street. To live closer to the East Carolina University-Athletic District -- where you'll find the stadiums and the arena, look along Charles Boulevard, East 14th Street, and South Elm Street.
