In the center of Downtown Akron along the intersection of Broadway and East Market Street, the University of Akron is a STEM-focused university with more than 300 programs. UA is a public university established in 1870. Due to the city's history as a hub for rubber manufacturing with companies like Goodyear, Goodrich, and Firestone starting out in Akron, the university developed one of the world's first College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
The Akron Zips play football at the InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field, which opened in 2009 to replace the Rubber Bowl (the original stadium built in 1939). The Zips participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Mid-American Conference. The mascot, Zippy the Kangaroo, is one of only two female college mascots in the country. The Zips are rivals with Kent State University's Golden Flashes, and every year they play for the Wagon Wheel, a blue and gold trophy.
Apartments near the University of Akron are plentiful -- anywhere in the downtown area will provide fast access to campus. If you want to be within walking distance of the stadium, look near the intersection of Exchange Street and Spicer Street. If you prefer the arts and want to be close to the Edwin J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, look along Broadway near the intersection with University Avenue.
