In 1878, the Holy Ghost Fathers established the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost. When it opened, it has six professors and 40 students. It was renamed to Duquesne in 1911. Today, this high-research, private university is top-rated university is the country's only Spiritan institution of higher education. The Duquesne Dukes are well-known for their basketball program, participating in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The football team is part of NCAA Division I as members of the Northeast Conference. Duquesne University is located in Uptown Pittsburg overlooking the Monongahela River. This busy neighborhood (also known as the Bluff) is also home to Mercy Hospital. With a history dating back to the 1700s, the area offers some amazing historic architecture and charming brick row houses. Duquesne University is across the street from the PPG Paints Arena, home of the five-time Stanley-Cup-winners, the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team.
