A superb medical training and treatment center on one of the state’s finest beaches

Medical Urban Beach Coastal UTMB Historic Walkable Tourism

The magnificent architecture of the Smith Building (“Old Red”) anchors the historic University of Texas Medical branch, a cutting-edge healthcare education and treatment facility on the far eastern end of Galveston Island. The historic campus hosts over 3,000 students and more than 11,000 employees, serving the region as a top-notch trauma center, research hub, and training center.

Living near UTMB comes with the many perks of a popular beach community. Many of the island’s most popular hangouts are nearby, with the city’s historic Downtown just a few blocks to the west and Seawall Boulevard to the south. Residential neighborhoods are all around the campus, providing numerous rental options—dozens of nearby apartments, condos, and houses are easily within walking distance of both UTMB and the local attractions. Although Galveston is an extremely popular resort destination, the neighborhoods around the Medical Branch contain some surprisingly affordable rentals just a stone’s throw from the shoreline.
