History

-

The Hohokam people inhabited Papago Vista for roughly 1,500 years. They were expert farmers who established a system of irrigation canals, carrying water from Salt Lake River to water their crops. The canals were so efficient that they were excavated hundreds of years later and became the footing for today’s water system.

In 1865, early Western settlers migrated into the area and built stores, mills, warehouses, and small communities across the vast desert land. In 1872, settlers from northern Mexico and southern Arizona arrived. Today, the area celebrates its history during the annual Tardeada Festival.

You can find visual arts everywhere in Papago Vista, from prehistoric drawings to contemporary arts by international artists. Watch for art in unexpected places, such as the post office or public library.
