History

-

The Playhouse District began as a cultural arts community juxtaposed against commercial shops and restaurants on Colorado Blvd. during a real estate expansion in the early 1920s, paving the way for now historical landmarks that truly define the heart of Pasadena.

The Pasadena Playhouse theater itself was constructed in 1925 and carried the tagline of "The State Theater of California." During financial instability in 1969, the theater was forced to close until its renovation and resurrection in 1984. The Playhouse District is now home to one of the oldest live theater venues in California.

The Pasadena Methodist Church, Pasadena Presbyterian Church, the Church of Christian Science and Fuller Theological Seminary all are within the district's limited borders.

Other historical sites include the Pacific Asia Museum, Vroman's Bookstore, The California School of Culinary Arts, Le Cordon Bleu school of culinary arts and the Pasadena Museum of California.
