Hernando DeSoto first discovered the area in 1541. After the Treaty of Pontotoc in the 1830s, Tunica began taking shape. From its early farming days to the collapse of the farming industry in the 1980s, Tunica experienced a boom followed by the bust that landed it on a list identifying the 25 U.S. counties with the lowest per capita income. Once Mississippi approved legalized gambling, the region experienced a resurgence and steady increase in its population.
