History

Five years after incorporating as a city in 1885, the population of Fresno numbered more than 10,000. A beautiful mix of people, including immigrants hailing from China, Scandinavian countries, Japan and Germany made their home in the area. Adding to the mosaic of cultures, a large Hispanic population joined the mix in the early-20th century. Today, people from more than 80 nationalities live in the Fresno area.

Learn more history and enjoy local culture in the Tower District, located in the southeast corner of Fresno High Roeding. Attend a fun event like the Tower Classic Car Show, the Rogue Arts Festival, which showcases local artists, or the annual Mardi Gras Parade. Easily access Highway 99, Highway 41 and Highway 180 from behind the wheel, all of which border Fresno High Roeding. Pay 75 cents per hour to park in one of downtown Fresno's metered parking spaces. Many businesses provide free parking for customers in and around the neighborhood.

Set your kids free to explore the unique playgrounds, or wander through manicured flower gardens and varied groves of ash, maple, pine, cedar, eucalyptus and redwood trees. Get a little sweaty and swing your tennis racket on one of eight championship tennis courts, or take it easy and play a game of horseshoes. Savor the cool breeze off the lake as you enjoy the contents of your picnic basket, then do a little afternoon fishing. You can also let your dog run free in the dog park, take a contemplative stroll through the Japanese war memorial or come back to watch a show from the regular concert series in one of the dance pavilions.

Pay an additional fee to frequent the Chaffee Zoo, also located on the park premises. Bring your kids to the Rotary Storyland and Playland, comprised of a walk-through park of Mother Goose stories and fairy tales and a small, separate family amusement park.
