Be near city attractions in charming, yet modern Roxborough!

Convenient Accessible Modern Public Transportation History Pennsylvania

Eleven miles northwest of Philadelphia, Roxborough’s convenient locale provides residents easy accessibility to city attractions in a charming, yet modern neighborhood.

Prior to the 1854 Act of Consolidation, most of Roxborough was part of the Roxborough Township. The area was a thriving and successful textile mill, which helped fund many of the community’s schools and parks during that time.

Nestled between the Schuylkill River and Wissahickon Valley Park, there’s plenty of natural green space and settings to go around. Locals enjoy fishing for trout at the park, and going on evening walks at the Manayunk Canal in their free time. Many delicious and trendy restaurants encompass Ridge Avenue – but a popular, no-frills eatery is Dalessandro’s Steak, a cheesesteak shop by the Walnut Lane Golf Course.

Residents are comforted by their direct access to Interstate 76, SEPTA bus and rail services, and Thomas Jefferson University East Falls Campus.

Living in Roxborough

History

-

After the Act of Consolidation in 1854, Roxborough was incorporated into the entire city of Philadelphia and quickly emerged as a highly desirable place to live due to its proximity to the river. Once Henry Avenue was expanded, small homes between Henry and Ridge Avenue began springing up along the hillsides.

Though the neighborhood does not have any museums of its own, many can be reached by a quick car drive. Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, the only authentically-restored Victorian house museum in Philadelphia, and the Wyck Historic House and Garden make for a lovely, educational afternoon.

Every year, the Manayunk Arts Festival brings in many people from all over the city. Enjoy the beautiful work of talented artists, including paintings, sculptures and jewelry, all while indulging in food from local restaurants.

Restaurants

-

Residents don't have to look far to find dozens of quality eateries in the Roxborough area. From upscale restaurants to local diners, this neighborhood has something for every occasion or taste bud. Main Street and Ridge Avenue are popular areas to find a unique place to eat, with many locals grabbing some coffee at the Volo Coffeehouse or a plate of banana pancakes at Taylor's Cafe.

Dalessandro's Steaks and Hoagies features specialty sandwiches that melt in your mouth. Customers go crazy for the renowned cheesesteak, but be sure to bring correct change as this is a cash-only establishment.

The Goat's Beard on Main Street offers homemade dishes from an eclectic menu. Fish tacos, sirloin mac and cheese, and mouth-watering burgers stand as customer favorites. The restaurant's efficient staff and cool vibe only add to the enjoyable dining experience.

The high-end Il Tartufo specializes in exquisite Italian cuisine. The intimate ambiance, extensive wine list and delicate dishes make this a date night must-visit. Come at lunch to enjoy entrées at lunch-sized prices.

Residents always find something exciting to do at night in Roxborough. Enjoy a pitcher of beer with friends at Pitchers Pub on Main Street or East End Tavern on East Avenue. An ideal hangout spot, The Grape Room on Grape Street features a homey feel, an extensive cocktail list, and open mic nights on Monday evenings.

Transportation

-

Conveniently located by Interstate 76, residents travel throughout the city with ease. A largely car-dependent area, very few errands can be accomplished on foot. Parking can be difficult to find, as the majority of residents choose to drive. Though there are not many accessible bike lanes, residents take advantage of available public transportation. SEPTA's Manayunk/Norristown rail line makes a stop in Wissahickon and the Ivy Ridge station. If you need a taxi, call Uber to schedule your next trip.

Parks

-

Gorgas Park on Ridge Avenue offers residents an escape to nature with its gazebos, grassy field and children's playground area. For a fun, free afternoon out, bring your family and pets to enjoy time in the pleasant Roxborough weather. The park hosts regular events like family movie nights, concert nights and annual events like the fall harvest. Enjoy pumpkin decorating, craft time for the kids, scarecrow making and much more. The event always makes for a good time of fun and fellowship among the community to celebrate the fall season.

Your dog will enjoy the Manayunk Dog Park of Pretzel Park. Meet other pet owners within the neighborhood and let your dog run free while you converse with the neighborhood's local experts on the walks for your furry friend.

If you're looking for a great running or cycling trail, Schuylkill River Trail is the place for you. This scenic trail along the river goes for 26.5 miles and brings people from all over the area. Come early if you hope to get a parking spot, because this popular park fills up fast on the weekends.

Cost

-

Not surprisingly, luxurious housing next to Schuylkill River and close proximity to thriving urban life won't be cheap. A $2.25 fare will get you a one-day pass to downtown. The cost of an imported beer averages at $4, while gas prices are 6.7 percent higher than the nation's average. Utilities and health care expenditures are comparable to the whole of Philadelphia, but housing expenditures soar past the average for the entire state. The community does draw in a high percentage of renters, with average median rental rates at $1,118 for a one-bedroom space. Because of the expensive housing and the community's central location, the cost of living in Roxborough is 13.3 percent higher than the whole of Philadelphia.

Shopping

-

Several unique boutiques and shops characterize the charm of this area, and Main Street is the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon exploring shopping opportunities. Personalize stationery and browse the wide selection of Philadelphia-themed housewares at The Little Apple, or peruse the home furnishings at Nadeau.

Residents also frequent The Attic Manayunk, a chic thrift store with a fantastic selection of vintage clothing and home decor. The friendly staff has great taste and always offers assistance with a smile. For more fun thrift shops, visit Consignment Marketplace and Worn Yesterday on Main Street.

Mainstream retailers, such as CVS Pharmacy, are conveniently located off of Ridge Avenue. For groceries and household items, people here rely on nearby The Foodery Roxborough. Pretzel Park Farmers Market on Silverwood Street sells locally grown fruits, vegetables and cheeses. Swing by any Saturday morning from May through November for fresh samples and neighborly conversations with local vendors.
