History

-

Sleep Train Arena provides residents of RP Sports Complex with many activities and events throughout the year. In addition to being the home of the Sacramento Kings, the arena provides a venue for concerts, rodeos and monster truck shows throughout the year. Because the floor can be converted to ice, the arena also hosts hockey games and ice shows.

To see galleries and museums, make the short drive into Sacramento. The Crocker Art Museum houses many permanent galleries and rotating art exhibitions. People also go to the museum to take art classes, view film screenings and see live performances. Old Sacramento State Historic Park provides a glimpse into pioneer days with blocks of preserved buildings from the Gold Rush era. The park has historical re-enactments throughout the year and a Halloween ghost tour in October.

Restaurants

-

Most restaurants in the RP Sports Complex area lie along Truxel Road. Indulge in Indian food with chicken tikka masala or lamb curry from Chaat Cafe. A side of spicy potato salad or garlic pesto naan complete the meal. Cheap prices and speedy service make the restaurant a popular place for a quick meal, and the $5 lunch specials always attract a crowd.

Locals stop by Teriyaki Time to have a plate of chicken teriyaki over rice, the restaurant's signature dish. Vegetarians enjoy many meatless options, such as vegetable tempura and vegetable noodles. The eatery serves large portions at affordable prices, and is a hugely popular spot for the lunch scene.

Start off the morning with a heaping plate of huevos rancheros from El Burrito Taqueria. While breakfasts are scrumptios, the restaurant specializes in burritos topped with cheese and doused in spicy sauce. The fries piled high with carne asada and many toppings make a great side or snack. Don't forget to stop by the salsa bar and pick out handmade salsa to go with the complimentary chips.

RP Sports Complex has little to offer in the way of nightlife, with just a few bars located in-town. Locals enjoy shooting pool and watching the Sacramento Kings basketball team on TV at neighborhood hangout Cheers Sports Bar. The selection of draft beers draws in many customers who take advantage of happy hour specials. For more nightlife options, locals make the short drive to downtown Sacramento, which houses many bars and clubs.

Transportation

Because most residents rely on personal vehicles for transportation, many businesses provide plenty of free parking. People also find easy biking around the area, with the bike lanes along most major thoroughfares. Most roads have sidewalks that facilitate walking through the neighborhood as well. The Sacramento Regional Transit operates only one bus route through the area, but residents can call a taxi company to arrange a cab ride. Uber operates in the area as well.

Interstates 5 and 80 intersect near the neighborhood, which makes getting out of town easy. To visit other areas using public transit, take the bus to the Amtrak station in downtown Sacramento. From there, trains provide service to the San Francisco Bay Area and other major cities, such as Seattle and Denver.

Parks

-

RP Sports Complex contains North Natomas Regional Park, which provides residents with ample opportunities for recreation. Multiple baseball diamonds attract those looking to play sports, as do wide-open areas for games. Children also enjoy playing on the playgrounds. Residents can bring their dogs for a walk in the park, which has been divided into separate areas for large and small dogs. The lake makes for a relaxing walk, and people also bike on the many miles of trails within the park. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the movie screenings and concerts that take place here.

To fully immerse yourself in the wilderness of the area, head a few miles out of town to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. This park encompasses many different habitats, and bird watchers come to catch a glimpse of the rare bird species that stopover in the marshes. Hunters also frequent the refuge to hunt doves and waterfowl during the winter and fall months. The staff hosts a number of activities throughout the year, including guided walks, bat tours and educational presentations.
